| | I went to bed at around 4:30 this morning. At exactly 5:30, I woke up to the sound of my mother screaming about the damn dog.
He got full-on sprayed by a skunk.
At 6 am, I finally settled the nausea in my stomach, and got out of my bed to deal with the chaos. The dog was washed, and my mom was dressed to go to her geneology seminar. I decided to go to work early, rather than deal with the dog and my father.
Dog smelled absolutely disgusting when I left my house at 7 something this morning.
At 8 something, when I returned home, I smelled the skunk as soon as I got out of the car. The stink only got stronger as I tried to enter my house. That's right. The damn dog still reeks.
We tried odor removing shampoo, tomato juice and a home remedy (part baking soda, part vinegar, and part kid's shampoo). He still reeks. It's absolutely horrible, and he is DESTROYING the outside of the house when we try to leave him outside.
I don't like my dog much right now. He no doubt got sprayed not because he was curious, but because he was out hunting.
Any ideas how to break this instinct of his to kill all animals on his property?
Any ideas on how to get the stink out of my dog? |

| | 1 pint hydrogen peroxide (3%)
1/4 cup baking soda
squirt of soap
Mix just before you use, and keep it out of the dog's eyes. Rub in well, and rinse with lots of water.
As for the hunting part - the skunk gave your dog a good lesson, which he will not likely soon forget. And it was cheaper than a bite, which would occasion a visit to the vet for stitches and shots.

| | Actually, this is his second skunking. The last one must not have been so "full-on". He didn't stink nearlyas much and it was much easier to get the stink off last time.
And he is bit ( pr maybe cut), right on his mouth. He's not acting rabid, so I guess he's ok. I cleaned the wound out. Personally, I think he deserves it all... except for the fact that the skunk smell is so horrible to me, yet he is sleeping fine.
GRRR.... damn dog!!! |

| | My dog has been skunked 4 or 5 times. I feel your pain. The stink is not just the dog. Does he wear a collar? Toss it, that will never come out. Take a good whiff of your carpet - probably stinks - you can use OdorZout - from PetsMart
Another bathing or two in tomato juice will help, as will a conditioner. |

| | If he has a bite, it is really important to take him in. Of course he won't be acting rabid, yet. You might at least call your vet, to ask whether or not wild skunks in your area carry rabies. Not something you want to risk.

| | My terrier (and avatar) Taco is a skunker. In my neighborhood, skunks live in the nearby canyons and underneath structures. Taco has come upon them from time to time and chased them out of the yard, snarling, hackles raised. Yet he has never gotten sprayed. (Knock on wood.)
On one occasion I witnessed him facing down a skunk who had somehow invaded our back yard. Taco must be part coyote, because as soon as the skunk turned around to defend itself, Taco jumped back six feet and was missed. He still threatened it(from a safe distance) until it finally left the way it came in, through a hole under the fence.
My daughter's dog, an amiable retriever, has been skunked twice. (Some get it, some don't.) The vet got rid of the odor.
Incidentally, one of the reasons skunks (and racoons and possums and stray cats) come around is to scavenge for the plates of cat food some kind but incredibly foolish people leave outside their doors. |

| | Ada's recipe is great. We used it when our brainless wonder got skunked.
Works like a charm

| | I have to second Cindy's comment--get the dog into the vet even if "Mr. Stinky" has been innoculated for rabies (which I hope he has). The protocol is to give a booster shot, even if you know the animal doing the biting.
Besides, if it's a bite, you don't want the dog to suffer an infection in an area so close to the brain.
Antibiotics and a rabies booster. Yeah, that's the ticket.
As for getting out the smell? Oy. It's damn near impossible. Both my dogs got sprayed last summer; (One of them got skunked twice) every time they get wet, they still reek. I expect more of the same this summer, because they never learn
It seems that I have "2 Stupid Dogs" (to quote the cartoon of the same name. )

| | It stains but tomato juice takes out skunk odor. I used to get sprayed all the time whenever I'd go horseback riding (back when I used to have a horse). |

| | Well, I've literally tried almost all of the advice given here. Thanks so much for the help, but my dog still stinks.
Well, he doesn't reek anymore, but I wouldn't want to kiss him on top of his head either.
Today he's pretty ripe because it's raining. So, we have went skunky dog smell to enjoy.
Luckily, I did buy something pretty good. It's called Pet Magic. This woman I work with does this Amway type thing called "Market America" or "the Mall Without Walls." She sells all sorts of stuff, and to even get into the business, she had to buy a lot of the products herself, so she had an extra bottle of the $10 Pet Magic.
I had my doubts, but this stuff isn't bad. It sprays onto the dog, so I don't have to give him yet another bath. It's supposed to be a natural enzyme that like eats the smell or something. It claims that it doesn't just mask the odor, but it does have a smell. It smells (on my dog anyway) like perm solution. Gah. Makes me glad I don't perm my hair anymore
Anyway, you can also spray the carpets with this stuff, so we have been. Luckily my dog hates the smell of the spray, so he's rolling around on the carpets trying to get the spray off him, and putting more spray onto the carpet
The smell is dying, and I hope that eventually it will go away.
As for the rabies thing, I called a family friend that is a vet and we described the area to him, and he believes it is a scratch the dog gave himself when he was pawing at his face after he was sprayed, and rolling around over every surface he could find (including pavement) trying to get the smell off. He seems to have just irritated his lip area, and it's an open sore.
I'll keep spray, spray, spraying. Thanks for your help and concern guys! |

| | We always bathed our dogs in tomato juice after they'd been sprayed. It seems to do the job. Although, it's pretty icky being elbow deep in the stuff.

If he's still destroys the outside of your house (something I'm familiar with) - consider "fixing" him. This presumes you haven't already, but it's amazing how calm a male will become after his testosterone peaks disappear. | | |
