High-carb diet kills five swans



I've always heard that one should not feed bread to birds, but this is the first time I've seen the proof.


The birds were filling up on bread instead of eating their normal diet of leafy greens, insects and tiny aquatic life, a doctor said.

Oh no! That is so sad. I love swans!

I've never been there. Are there signs posted requesting that people not feed the swans?

You mean those "do not feed" signs are there for a reason? Wow. Does that mean that maybe people ought to pay attention to them? What a concept.

My local lake has a sign that says "Do not feed the waterfowl" with a long explanation of the dangers.

Unfortunately I doubt many people bother to read it.

Or the people who tap on the glass of the containers at the pet store? I'll always ask people to stop doing that as I point out the "Do Not Tap On The Glass!" sign.

The Metreo Toronto Zoo has a lifesize sculpture of an orangutan. It is a memorial to mark the death of one of the zoo's orangutans. A family threw food into the animals' area causing a fatal battle for the food. When the animals are fed by the keepers a routine is followed to ensure everyone's safety. By throwing a limited amount of food into the enclosure the orangutans had to battle for it.

The UMass pond doesn't have any signs but I've taken the heels of bread loaves for the ducks and the swans a couple of times. Not anymore.
