Dog eats chicken bone (VERY GROSS -- WARNING)

Frasier got into the garbage yesterday and stole a chicken bone. We were unable to wrestle it away from him before he swallowed it. I was at work during all of this, I only heard about it when I came home.

Frasier seemed pretty normal last night. He wasn't a ball of energy, but sometimes he's not at night.

This morning, he seemed pretty normal too. Still not a ball of energy.

This is where you have to stop reading if you're easily skeeved, or if you have designs to make fun of me. I'm not ready to laugh yet.

Both my parents were home today. On my way out to work I noticed something very small was sticking out of the dog's rectum. With the two of them home, I didn't bother to get a closer look, and see if it was really something sticking out, or to see if it was a wisp of fur that somehow got some feces on it. I told my parents to check it out (knowing that they love the dog and are more than capable) and I went to work.

It bothered me all day, but I didn't call home, because, god forbid if there was a problem, it would just kill me.

I came home, and asked about the dog. Mind you, just my father was home at this point, and... well... every thing is someone else's problem with him. He said the dog was fine. I noticed, however, that my spunky dog who is always glad to see me didn't even bother to get up to see me.

I called the dog, and he did get up. He's wagging his tail, and will perform any trick I ask him to. Then (it gets gross again) I checked his anus. There was still something there. I got rubber gloves, and touched it. It was somewhat malleable. I pulled on it. The dog didn't seem to be in any discomfort. I pulled it out. It was longer than my hand is wide, and was thin. It looked like a pine needle from a white pine, and was about as maleable (only, it didn't seem like it would break if I bent it... not that I tried).

There didn't seem to be any blood. The dog was interested in what I had done, but didn't seem too upset about it. He inspected his rectum, and then went and laid down.

The peice I pulled out was probably as long as the chicken bone he ate, so I'm assuming it's a shard. There are probably more.

Sigh. I guess I have to call the vet, but I guess I was hoping someone here would tell me there's nothing to worry about. My parents don't seem too upset, which makes me think I'm over reacting.

Anyone have any experience with this? Is there something I should do in the mean time? I'm assuming (and will confirm in a minute) that the vet is closed and has been for longer than I've been home. Likely, I won't be able to get someone to look at him until tomarrow.

Sigh.

emeleel will become famous soon enough

Oh, poor baby! I would definitely get him into the vet ASAP, because even if shard #1 didn't cause problems, there's no telling what the other pieces will do to the little guy.

Although, there was a dog once that swallowed an entire cake knife and was okay after surgery.....

Well, I did call the vet right after I posted, and the receptionist said that a lot of dogs swallow bones, and that it's very, very common. Phew.

She said that as long as he is passing things, it's ok. She even warned that there might be some blood in his stool for a while, but it's ok, just so long as he is passing.

I have seen him pass since I removed the fragment, and he's got his energy back, so I think he's out of the woods now (I hope).

Thanks for youe support melanie.

I'm glad that he seems ok!!! I'm sure he'll be fine. Just keep an eye on him and take him to the vet if he seems like he's in pain or if there is any excessive bleeding.

PS - anyone who has children or pets that they love won't find this story all that disgusting. We all hate putting on the rubber gloves, but these are the things that we do for the ones we love.
