| | For the love of a dog.... | | This is one of those sweet stories from life that, well, you know the people are a little bit crazy, but it speaks to the kindness of humans (and true love) when it comes to the animal kingdom. Nice match for the bad stories you read in the press.
A young woman at work has a 5 year old mutt she got from the pound (after losing another pound mutt to cancer).
The dog goes to Grandma daycare everyday while the woman and her husband work. One day last week, Abbie (the dog) starts acting very strange...shaking, panting, having trouble walking etc. Grandma takes the dog to the vet, and one thing and another, keeps Abbie overnight since Grandma has few steps and Mommy & Daddy have many.
Middle of the night, Grandma and Grandma rush Abbie to the University of Pennyslvania veternary school.
Turns out, the dog has serious spinal degeneration and needed to be put to sleep or have surgery, since she was in a lot of pain.
Grandma and Grandpop (who are retired teachers, not millionaires) don't even ask the cost, surgery and rehabilitation it is, no matter what, they are picking up the tab.
Abbie made it through surgery yesterday and was well visited by all family today.
Grandma is glad she is retired so she can take care of Abbie during her rehabilitation. She said, I knew there was a reason I retired and I figured it would be a sick family member I had to take care of. Now I know.

One of my favorite stories is from a few years ago - a couple had a dog that about 5 years before had gotten sick with cancer or something and was already like 12 or 14 years old, but they paid over $5000 to get the dog well again. They had a baby 5 years after the dog got better, after many tries, and when the baby was about 3 weeks old, he stopped breathing while the mom was out of the room. The dog realized what was wrong and made the mom come back in the room just in the nick of time to save the baby. Maybe your friends' dog can do something similar for them some day!

We are VERY lucky, those of us who live in this area, VERY lucky. Presby saved my husband's life and Penn is there to save Reggie if I ever (God forbid) need it.
If I'm not mistaken, Penn is the #1 vet hospital in the country. Knowing it is 20 minutes away, and your pet will get the very best of care, is a wonderful thing.
Is it wonderful, how my friend at work has her whole family behind her with her dog? Yes, there are no grandkids yet, which has to help, but still, what a nice family. No wonder they have made such a nice daughter!

What goes around comes around in life, eventually. Treating animals with love and respect comes around, even if not in the Clear Message return of the aforementioned example.
There is balance to this family's perspective, FWIW. They understand that in another set of circumstances, they would have had to make the humane choice to put Abbie to sleep. They could only choose surgery if Grandma was willing and able to care for the dog during recovery. She (the dog!) needs to be crated for 4 to 6 weeks in order to heal, and nobody would do that to her if she wouldn't have constant company and care.
The grandparents felt as if they were in a space in their lives that they could afford the time and the money to make a pound mutt's life on this planet better...and to help their daughter who was still mouring the dog she lost to cancer.
This is the GOOD part of humanity.
