| | I swear. This stuff is like crack cocaine for dogs. Harley's vet suggested I give her one a day at her last checkup (slight tartar on her teeth) and ever since, my budget hasn't been the same. I give her one, she tosses it up in the air and catches it, rolls on it, licks it, dares me to take it away, and generally plays like a puppy with it. After she finally eats it (good thing is that there aren't crumbles to vacuum up), she stands at the cupboard door and whines pathetically for another one. And, she can keep it up for hours.
It's driving me crazy.
Her teeth look greath though.

| | Hm. I've noticed some tartar build on Rexy's teeth and I've seen them at PetSmart but haven't picked them up yet.
Do they have a 12-step program in case my little dingo-doggie becomes addicted? Is it like meth - all it takes is one time and they are hopelessly addicted?

| | Lynn, please read up on them first. Libs used to eat one every other day,m and would do anything for them. I got an email on my collie list, and they've had a lot of problems- dogs choking on them, not digesting them and having to have surgery to remove the undigested bits- my vet has suggested that his dog owners not use Greenies. CNN article Newsday article
Quote from the second article: Quote: |
Veterinarian Brendan McKiernan of Wheat Ridge, Colo., a board-certified internist, disagrees. "They don't dissolve in the stomach," he says. "When we take them out, they're not digested. And they are causing both esophageal and intestinal problems in dogs to an extent that is concerning."

| | My dog is addicted, but he only gets one treat a day (either a greenie, a rawhide bone, or a toy). In addition to his one treat a day, he gets Better 'N Ears. He goes nuts for those!!!
My dog knows where we keep them and will ask for all of the above any time we're both in the kitchen.
I didn't know about these problems with the greenies. |

| | Just don't serve them on crackers....
Cindy, I wasn't aware of the problems with them either. Rex gets (gasp) a "chew" every day when I leave from work. He asks for it very cutely and then saves it until I come back home. It's like he can't eat the chew until he's happy that his family is back home.
I think there was a freebie posted in here a while back and I got a sample. Will see if they show up and also ask my vet when I go for shots next month.

| | Harley does the same thing - I'll give her a dog biscuit before I leave in the morning and when I get home, she's still carrying it around. She'll settle down and eat it then. I wonder what that is all about?
I give her the teenie Greenies - they are sized for her breed. I bought a large one once, just for the hell of it, and it's still in the car as a car toy. She won't eat it.

| | Oh yeah....I have to give Rex the mini-chunk Iams because he yaks on the larger ones (what is it with that dog...the food will sit in his dish all day, and when he figures out he's not getting any table scraps at dinner, he wolfs down the whole thing in about 30 seconds and then walks around hacking).
Dogs are weird. But they love us, so we put up with them.

| | The girls get raw bones three or four times a week. Cooked bones are dangerous, they can choke on them because cooked bones shatter. Raw bones don't shatter, and if you give the really big ones, they don't choke. Our vet is a big fan of raw bones, esepcaiily after seeing Liby's teeth- they are completely white, so he'll never have to do dental work on her. Dixie just has baby teeth. |

| | Dan's against raw bones or meat...says it will develop a taste for it. With livestock around, we try to keep away from that. (That goes for the cats and the dog. )

| | OH DEAR GOD.
I bought some Greenies. Rex them.
THEY GIVE HIM THE MOST HORRIBLE GAS. Gahhhhhh, I can't even stand to be around him! But Jeez Louise, they are so damned expensive (and he likes them), I can't afford NOT to use them up.
I'm walking around the house with a clothespin on my nose.

| | That's weird, they don't affect Harley that way at all. But the constant begging is equally annoying. Twice last night, she woke me up and I thought she wanted to go outside. Stumbled through the kitchen and she plopped down in front of the refrigerator and stared at the Greenies bag on top of it. They're on sale at Target this week. $17.99 for 20 ounces. I bought 3 bags and will go back for more.

| | I gave him one last night and it seemed to be fine. No gas...so maybe it was something else those other two nights. He doesn't beg for them, he begs for a chip every morning, but he does like them.
