Ban the DEED, Not the BREED

THERE ARE NO BAD DOGS. ONLY BAD OWNERS.

First this breed, then which one? Where does ignorance and intolerance of dogs end and remedying the problem with owners who mistrain and mistreat good dogs, turning them bad, begin?

I ask you to repost this.More importantly, if you're in a position to, DO something about it.

This is about California legislation being passed to exterminate pit bulls. If it passes in California, it could be on it's way to anywhere. Someone has to try to make a difference...what if it were YOUR beloved, kind pet?

This has to be stopped! Repost, pass it on, fight the fight for innocent dogs and their loving owners everywhere.

Leslie, Proud mama of two sweet Rotties

Re Ban the DEED, Not the BREED

*sigh*

All I can think of is Dylan, my sweet little pit/shepard cross who was the smartest, sweetest dog I ever knew, and Cedar, my friend's rottie/pit cross who regularly let me use him as a pillow.

Can't we just ban the humans?

Re Ban the DEED, Not the BREED

I really don't understand how people hate pitbulls. I've known them to be smart and quite loving.

I think that people scapegoat particular breeds. Most of the dogs in pounds are pits because people are afraid to adopt them. It's so sad.

I'll gladly adopt more pits in the future. I know better than the stereotypes. I loved my pit mix far more than the purebred foxhound I owned. And which one was the viscious dog? The foxhound. Ok, not viscious, but, she nipped humans, the pit mix never did.

To exterminate a breed of animals is dispicable.

Re Ban the DEED, Not the BREED

Part of the problem, though, is that there are some breeders breeding those breeds SPECIFICALLY to accentuate the aggressive genes.

I think that dogs are like humans. We've got good people and violent people. Any dog can bite under the right (or wrong) conditions. Pit Bulls are beautiful. The problem is that certain dogs like Pit Bulls and Chows can be very strong and if not properly trained can be dangerous - whether they mean to be or not. It wouldn't be a problem if all pet owners were responsible and if all pets got proper training, but they don't. Many dogs are trained to be aggressive. And even with the best trained dogs there can be incidents - regardless of whether its a Pit Bull or a Poodle.

Re Ban the DEED, Not the BREED

I've been bitten three times since we started going to the dog park. Twice by Jack Russell terriers, and once by a beagle. All three had owners who simply didn't have a clue as to how to train their dogs. The owner of one Jack Russell who bit me actually accused me of upsetting her dog- who didn't like to have people sit at a table.

Otoh, one of Libby's favourite frineds is a deaf pitbull, who is the biggest suckiest dog in the entire park. This dog always kisses Libs and wants to sit on my lap to give kisses. Or, he used to - now he must wear a leather muzzle any time he leaves his house, even to poop in his own back yard.

Last year, we took Libby to agility. A couple started up late in the summer, and brought their 3 month old puppy. It was a dachshund, and it went nuts! It tried biting Libby but #1 pulled her away. It did bite a GSD pup, and then when our trainer tried to tell the people to leash their dog, it bit her twice. She started right then working with that dog- she foircd it to lie down and she held its neck while she said "No!" very firmly. The owner began sobbing and told all of us to leave her little baby alone. The trainer told her that if she didn't train her dog now, she'd lose it if it ever bit anyone else- Windsor doesn't give a third chance, the dogs are euthanized.

Yep, I absolutely despise breed bans, and I cannot express the way I feel about anyone who gets a dog and doesn't bother to train it.

The slogan Bane the DEED Not the BREED is specifically for punishing bad owners who wont train a dog, bad breeders who wont care for a dog (unless a dog is severely inbred through several generations and has a genetic issue much like a human, even breeding from fighting dogs wont create a mean dog, you have to MAKE them that way from mistreatment, negative reinforcement, abuse and neglect), people who kidnap good dogs to toss them a fight to purposely lose and die thus winning them a bet, people who raise any breed and teach it to fight through abuse and mistreatment, owners who get a dog only to chain him up and neglect him, etc.

There are NO BAD BREEDS. ONLY BAD OWNERS.

Re Ban the DEED, Not the BREED

Last year when I was still going to rehab in Detroit, I walked out of the parking lot and found all this commotion- apparently a pit bu;ll had wandered onto the campus, and the seucirty offivers had herded it into a fenced area of the lawn and caged him there while waiting for animal control to show up. I was warned away from the fence - "Ma'am, that is a vicious and dangerous dog!". Well, the vicious dog just wanted his ears scratched- he just moaned and grinned as I was petting him. He was really skinny, so I went and bought him a cheeseburger in the cafeteria. I hand-fed it to him and then he wanted a belly rub. Finally, animal control showed up, and tried to get him into the cage using long sticks and a net. I was furious- and so I told them to get out of my way. I walked up to him and gently led him by putting my hand on his back, and patted the cage floor for him. He hopped into his cage and just wagged his tail. vicuios dog indeed. I would have adopted him in a heartbeat if Windsor didn't prohibit any new pit bulls from being brought into your home. Poor old guy, I've always wished that he could have come to live with us. I had no sympathy at all for the securty guy or the animal control guys either.
