| | The Cat Formerly known as Gordo | |
It's hard to imagine that living here in North Cuba, Brian and I did not know that "Gordo" is Spanish for "fat". While at first we thought that Gordo was a dignified and fitting name for our new kittie, he doesn't seem to know that name, and we don't cherish the thought of calling him "Fatty".
So, We have renamed our not so little buddy. Brian remarked that he had the coloring, shape, and activity level of a potato, and suggested "Spud". While this is adorable, it seems undignified. We like "Tater". He can go by "Tate" and when I'm baby talking to him, he can be my little Spuddy Buddy (not to be confused with the X-rated meaning of a spuddy buddy!!!
Tate was very sick. He had a cold on Thursday night. I went to work and called the vet on Friday, made an appt for Sat morning. Luckily, my boss sent us home early on Friday. When I got home, Tate had vomited twice and was incredibly conjested and covered with mucus and phlemn (not to worry - no photo will be posted). I called the vet and brought him in then. He had a horrible respiratory infection that was in his lungs and he had a high fever. Doc gave him IV fluids, 2 shots and sent him home with meds. By Sat morning the fever had broken, but he had vomited twice and still had very labored breathing. We brought him back for more fluids and another shot.
He's still not well, but he's much much better. Getting more active and exploring a bit. He vomited last night and this morning, but he looks better and is more animated. Auntie Cindy suggested that the meds are upsetting his belly, so we're going to get him some yogurt when we go out and see if that helps - if he'll eat it.
Anyway, he's beautiful and loveable and sweet, and once he kicks this horrible cold, our little Tater will be a perfect addition to the family. |

| | Re The Cat Formerly known as Gordo | | Oy. Make sure that at the least he's taking the meds with food. I wait until I see Dino eating before I break out his pills. Luckily, one does not need to wait long to see Dino eating... but man, the stinky poops!

| | Re The Cat Formerly known as Gordo | | He's not eating. I can't tempt him with any food. He didn't get that girlish figure by not eating, so I figure he'll eat when he's hungry - he's had a traumatic week and he doesn't feel well. I've tried dry food, canned food, packet food, cat treats. No go.
I don't want to force him, but I feel so badly for him. |

| | Re The Cat Formerly known as Gordo | | Hi, Tater Tot!
How about tinned sardines or tuna? He can't live on that, but it mightn't hurt to get him interested in eating again. He's just such a yummy boy - I want a Spud hug! |

| | Re The Cat Formerly known as Gordo | | I may try that. He's better, but still pretty bad.
When we got back from the store tonight I was delighted to see him lying on his new Birdie's Blankie Bag, but a few minutes later he went back behind the sofa. I did buy him yogurt with cultures and some fish oil tablets to squeeze over it, but I don't know if he'll eat any. |

| | Re The Cat Formerly known as Gordo | | Tater is not at all interested in yogurt, fish oil, or any other form of nourishment. He made that rather clear in his own non-violent way.
The great news is that he only stayed behind the sofa for a short time, and when I went back into the living room he was on the love seat! I didn't think a cat that large was physically capable of jumping up onto a couch!!! This must be a sign that he's feeling better. Of course he's still snotting and phelming and these are activities that don't thrill me ever, but especially not on my leather furniture, but It's good to see him not hiding! |

| | Re The Cat Formerly known as Gordo | | Did Tatey-cat eat the tuna or anything else? So sad that his life JUST turned around for the better and now he's sick! I have a lot of love for shelter animals -- all of mine (except my pig) were "unwanted" animals at one point in their lives. Thank goodness he has a loving family to take care of him during this rough time. |

| | Re The Cat Formerly known as Gordo | | Tate hasn't eaten yet, but he's doing much better. He's spitting up a lot of the gunk from his lungs which is rather icky, but very nice to see as it means he's breathing easier. We managed getting some of his meds down. I don't think he's drinking much at all (if anything) and he hasn't eaten, though I do think he ate last night because his vomit looked like it. He is definately more comfortable, active and alert. He's not hiding anymore. Hopefully tonight he'll have some more food.
He refused the yogurt and fish oil, but......I'm sure as he starts to feel better he'll eat. And he's just a snuggly cuddly guy. |

| | Re The Cat Formerly known as Gordo | | When Meowlth was sick, I used a kid medicin thing to force liquid down him and I rubbed baby food(lamb) on his feet, he had to lick it off and it helped him get better.
I hope Tater gets better soon

| | Re The Cat Formerly known as Gordo | | Leslie - Tater's story is on my blog.
He did puke on the rug once last night, but just a tiny bit and mostly phlegm. I don't think he's eaten yet.
I did try to put some of the yogurt and fish oil on his nose hoping he would lick it off. He did not like that. Getting the meds in him is a real challenge. If you give him something he doesn't like, he starts smacking his mouth and manages to cough up a whole lot of gunk. Then he starts foaming at the mouth and we have to spend 10 minutes trying to wipe his face. At least he's coughing up the gunk.
He's so adorable and loveable! It's like having an infant though. We run around with napkins and paper towels to wipe the snot, drool and phlegm off his face. | |
