Feline Flea Allergy

Poor Stranger. She's apparently developed this. We noticed an unusually large number of tumblefurs drifting through the kitchen. And then I noticed she was biting more than usual. And THEN I found the bare patches on her butt.

We got the flea treatment stuff on all three of them. Also picked up some of the hydrocortizone spray. Fortunately, the spray apparently tastes REALLY nasty, so it's helping her to cut down on the biting.

My poor baby. First she gets all this uncomfortable stuff, and THEN Mommy puts all kind of smelly nasties on her.

At least she's finally figured out that if she bites her butt it's gonna taste nasty.

Not the quickest learner is my baby cat.

Well, she's gone from hiding in the deep, deep box to stalking around the house looking grumpy, so I think she's starting to feel a little better. I still feel horrible that it took me so long to notice the problem.

She's actually started asking to have the cortizone sprayed on her when her butt itches really bad. This is remarkable behavior in the cat that took three years to figure out how to ask to be fed*.

(*It's not like I'm expecting her to speak English or anything. But the whole "stalking through the house whining and turning the nose up at the food six times before remembering that we're stalking through the house whining because we're HUNGRY and eating will make us be NOT HUNGRY" thing was a total drag.)

Hmmm, I didn't know that #2 was a cat.

I'm glad that she's doing better.

Re Feline Flea Allergy

OK, so the rash is completely gone, and has been for months now. But the bald spot is still there. And she's taken her "cleaning thing" to new heights.

I'm thinking she's got a case of dry skin. She's almost always scratching or grooming herself these days. I've been keeping up with the flea treatments on all of them, and I've been checking her fur, no sign of those. But she really doesn't seem comfortable.

Anyone have any advice or suggestions for helping her with dry skin? I've been looking at a product called Lipaderm... anyone had any experience with it?

Also, I give my Anna cat a fish oil capsule every couple of days, in a dish of moist food. She always had dandruffy fur and scratched constantly until I began with the fish oil. I buy the triple fish kind- three different fish oils. She loves it, and her fur is nice and shiny again.

As for the bald bits, I swear by bag balm. Do I sound like the dad and his Windex in My Big Fat Greek Wedding?

Bag balm.

On Stranger cat.

The phrase "end in tears" comes to mind here. I'm just sayin'.

Re Feline Flea Allergy

As much as she might not like it, if she's still licking the spot bald, you might want to use one of those collars for a couple days to give the area time to calm down.

I've really considered that, MJ, but Stranger really has a "thing" about cleaning, and I'm afraid that making her spend a couple days "not" cleaning will drive her completely insane. Not that that's a long trip for her, or anything.

It sounds like compulsive behavior - have you talked to the vet? If it's interfering with her healing, you may have to have an unhappy neurotic cat for a couple days.

Re Feline Flea Allergy

Jezabelle had a flea alergy when we lived in California, she pulled out ALL her hair-as much as she could reach, so she looked like a really deformed poodle-with a hairy face and front, and the tip of her tail-everything else bald. and NOTHING I did could stop it. We moved, the higher climate got rid of the fleas-her hair grew back, she was happy.

:hugs: to you and to stranger
