| | Rex is sick. | | And has been since Mother's Day evening.
He's been throwing up since then, and I've had him in the vet's office multiple times. We've tried different food, we've tried limiting how much he eats, we've tried meds to help him keep it down. We've had blood drawn (such a brave little dog!) and the results came back perfectly normal.
He's totally full of energy. Last night he was such a pest with his toy I finally had to take it away from him to get him to settle down.
But nothing's working.
He's still getting sick at least once a day. Today he tossed cookies three times, even though he'd only had 1/4 c of dog food (two separate feedings of 1/8 c, about 4 hours apart).
I talked to the vet, and he is going to do some x-rays and berium tomorrow a.m. to see if there is anything abnormal. So my dingo doggie is spending the night with Dr. Kelly (whom I adore - Best. Vet. Ever.) and I miss him so much.
So say a prayer, cross your fingers, whatever...I appreciate all the good positive energy you can send his way. I know y'all understand, Rex is not "just" our dog. All I want is for him to be better.

| | I hope he feels better soon! Any chance he ate something bad? Missy got dreadfully sick a few weeks ago after eating a venus fly trap. Of course, I do realize that Rex is the glasses-eating, rat-poison-eating wonder dog.

| | Yeah, he's well known for eating anything and everything, isn't he. Doc asked about that the first time we went in, but I didn't know of anything that he'd eaten that could have caused so violent a reaction.
I just talked to my mom and her feline fur-baby is sick too. Has to be on an IV all weekend for kidney problems.

| | Aww.
Frasier has been sick for a while too. All our dogs always had the barfing thing. The vet said it was reflux. We weren't too worried about Frasier's "reflux" but he started pooping in the house and having diahria in the house. That was worrisome!
My parents kept the dog when I moved out. The vet recommended that they cook his food for him. So my mom makes brown rice, turkey or chicken, and some mixed vegetables. The dog eats better than I do! The dog has stopped pooping and barfs less (but still barfs some).
I hope there's an easy solution to your problem. My boyfriend's family also had to make their dog's food because of their delicate stomaches. I hope that's all Rex will need! |

| | Doc called as I was driving in to work. There's some kind of opaque blockage in the intestine, and while some food is getting digested and going through, not all of it is. Hence the constant barfing.
So he's going to surgery this a.m. Dr. Kelly postponed two other surgeries to make room for him in case that was the route we'd take (like we wouldn't). With any luck, Rexy will be home tomorrow morning.

| | Dual posting Margaret...thanks for the good wishes. Rex has a history of eating EVERYTHING, but not of barfing (well, only when he snarfs his kibble and yaks on it ) which is why we were so worried about him. No delicate stomach here, I don't think.
I haven't mentioned here either that Rex's symptoms are very similar to Gastric Lymphoma...I have two friends who lost their dogs to this last year. In both cases, the vet couldn't figure out what was wrong until there was an x-ray done, and in both cases, the vet probably waited too long to do anything to save the dog. I'm so glad my vet is more aggressive and moves more quickly.

| | Aw, poor Rexie! I hope his surgery goes well and he'll be home and feeling better really soon.
And, I'm not sure if we want to know what the blockage turns out to be.

I'll keep the graphic stuff to a minimum, Melanie. Hubby keeps reminding me that not everyone wants gory details, but the vet seems to like it.

| | Gastric lymphoma is what Astro has, last March they told us he would only last a few months... he's down to 8.8lbs from 12, but he's still with us, still active, still enjoying life But still, I fervently hope that's not Rex' situation.

| | Well, surgery is over. He has a LONG incision and will have to take it easy, but everything is fine. Doc Kelly thinks he will be good as new and bounce back quickly, and I get to go pick him up this afternoon!!
No idea what caused the blockage - no socks, Q-tips or other strange things. He had a slightly swollen (something - it's similar to an appendix in a human, but not the same thing), but nothing horrible. Best of all, no cancer.
MJ, I didn't realize that's what Astro had (or I'd forgotten)...I hope he continues to do well even with it!
