| | My poor Missy is at the vet for the weekend, getting rehydrated. Her kidneys are apparently not working properly, which led to a build-up of body toxins as well as dehydration (everything's running through her, neither keeping a proper fluids balance nor flushing out the various toxins) so she's at the vet getting 2-3 days worth of fluids and possibly antibiotics.
She's 17 1/2, and the doc said kidneys in cats are like hearts in people - the thing most likely to go out with advanced age. She may be fine after a couple days of fluids and meds, or she may be slipping away, there's really no telling at this moment.
Poor baby.

| | Re My poor kitty baby :-( | | That happened with my cat too, around the same age. He ended up being ok, and the vet put him on a special diet. My mom decided not to follow the diet, and he still lived for several more years. We just lost him last fall. He didn't go because of his kidneys, as far as we know (he ran away, so it could have been that he left to die, it could be he got eaten, it could be he was run over, etc).
I hope your cat has several more happy years too!!! Good luck kitty. |

| | Re My poor kitty baby :-( | | Changing the diet can do a lot, or so I've been told. It sucks that your furbaby is in the furbaby hospital though - I can't stand the thought of having one of my "children" not home, especially if he's sick.

| | Re My poor kitty baby :-( | | Thanks, Margaret, that's very encouraging! The doc was very careful not to sway one direction or the other in her predictions.
Thanks, MJ.

I've had two cats with the same problem and treatment. They made it through just fine.

| | Re My poor kitty baby :-( | | UTI!
I only spoke to a tech this morning, the vet won't be in til later. But the tech said she seems to be doing well - hissing at them, mad as anything, when they open the cage, after getting poked and prodded all weekend - but I have to wait for the vet to be completely sure. A couple more things the vet needs to check this afternoon and I'll know more then. I don't know if it was just a UTI, or if the renal failure is there as well, the vet can tell me more later. <---- Happy kitty mommy

| | Re My poor kitty baby :-( | | She's home! She had a raging UTI, according to the vet, and she's most of the way through her course of antibiotics for that. I get the joy of feeding her the rest. The vet still thinks that she probably has kidney problems, but won't know for sure without bloodwork. She may also have diabetes, again that would take bloodwork. I'm going to hold off on that and she how she is after recovering from this. She's still a little unsteady on her back legs - her poor bottom is raw - but she looks SO much better!

| | Re My poor kitty baby :-( | | Well, she had been doing much better since coming home - still wetting inappropriately, but not noticeably sick. Then she went mostly blind. Her eyes are dilated pretty much all the way most of the time and she's just slinking around, bumping into things. She spent two days at the vet again, with the vet trying to flush out whatever might be wrong. The doc thinks it's some sort of toxin build-up again, but instead of making her sick to the point of staggering like last time, it's affected her vision. They're not permanently dilated, but most of the time. Poor baby, she's just wandering around like a lost soul trying to figure out where to go. The biggest problem is that she doesn't want to go down the hall to the bathroom, so she's wetting in the living room and the "foyer" area, which is where she is staying all the time now. She will sometimes use the pan if I take her to the bathroom - never imagined I'd be taking my cat to the potty like a training toddler!
Other than the vision problems she seems mostly healthy although she's not eating as much as I'd like. If this doesn't clear up (and it could, if it is a toxicity problem and we can get it flushed out) it's going to be interesting!
