Dirty Kitty

Nardo looked unusually shadowy yesterday after we did a little home cleaning... turns out that he'd gotten into the fireplace and folled around in the soot for fun.

He went from a bright orange-and-cream tabby to a gothic-looking burnt orange and sooty highlights tabby. It's taken a lot of toweling-off to get him back to near-normal.

Although I'm not about to bathe him without serious assistance. He's got velociraptor-like thumb claws that he often uses when he's not happy about being harassed or manhandled...

Wink

File, it's a good idea to bathe Nardo as soon as possible to get all the muck off him. I hope he doesn't get sick bathing himself.

Have you tried wrapping him securely in a towel and bathing him portions at a time? I also use rubber gloves to protect my hands and forearms when bathing my cats, just in case.

Good luck!

How does the costy of having the cat bathed professionally compare to the co-pay on your health insurance? I bet it's worth any difference.

eventually he will get clean, he can't stay dirty forever. He has to lick himself sometimes. I'd wait it out.

Years ago I lived in an apartment that was the bottom half of a house. There had been a fireplace in what used to be the livingroom, we discovered that while they had boarded it up, they hadn't bothered to clean it out-we discovered this when my pure white cat decided to play in the old fireplace.

we had a grey cat for quite awhile.

According to our vet, chimney soot has some pretty toxic substances in it, and he unfortunately treats a fair number of cats every year who lick themselves clean after soiling themselves with soot. You might want to keep an eye on poor Nardo, and look inside his mouth to make sure he doesn't have any sores inside from the stuff. Apparently, it can burn mucous membranes.

wow Cindy I didn't know this-I'm sorry I didn't know this when Marquis did his chimney stunt, I'd have washed him right away-live and learn (of course, since Marquis was lazy and let Jez do all the bathing, it's Jez we should have worried about)

Why do hear a chorus of 'Smelly Cat' in the background?

I hope Nardo is okay.
