[spoiler]actually, the fruit was a coincidence. The director was looking for something to put in scenes to reflect light (he was using an unusual light diffusion technique that makes so much of the movie have that particular look) and that fruit served the purpose well. From the book

Actually, I didn't like the movie until someone bought Hubby that book one Christmas and I, being bored, read it - and then I couldn't wait to see the movie. There was so many direction and production things that make it a ground-breaker in film technique that totally escaped me, and once I got into the movie from that angle, I came to love the plot, the music, etc... (Not so much Puzo's original book, though, go figger.)
