Epinions in Time magazine

My apologies if this has already been posted.

Epinions gets some coverage in the Aug. 27, 2001 issue of Time, pages 58-9. The article by Richard Lacayo is titled "Everyone's a Critic" and its sub-head is: "And vox populi is in vogue as ordinary folks share their do-it-yourself reviews via the Internet."

Epinions is highlighted in a column under the heading "The Critical Masses: There are numerous sites that invite users to sound off on all manner of things. Here are a few notable ones." Epinions is right after Amazon.com and just before www.rollingstone.com.

"www.epinions.com Read the review and the site will evaluate the pros and cons of books, CDs or just about anything else -- from health-club chains to foreign cars -- and then help you find the best deal on them."

The article contains a quote by kcfoxy: " 'It's that community I like; you're sharing ideas with all kinds of people across the country and in other countries too, and then you get feedback through e-mail,' says Casey Stewart, 50, a registered nurse living in Stockton, Calif., who has rated more than 700 books, records and other products for Epinions as 'kcfoxy.' 'That's what it's about, sharing over the fence with neighbors.' "

The article's conclusion: "The review pages of Amazon and Epinions are pretty cheerful too. Cyberspace may be famous for its rough and tumble, but for a good many Internet reviewers, it's largely a four-star world."

That kcfoxy sure gets around. Digging around in her old reviews, I found out that she's been interviewed about Epinions by magazines before. The last one may have been the Rolling Stone magazine, in an article about empowering consumers.

She's a star!

Actually, it was Wired, which also featured epinioneers like Chris Bickel, Bonies7 and Poseidon.
Here's a link to the archived article:
Revenge of the Know-it-Alls
But, yeah, I agree...Casey's a star (and a great person IRL).

Blame that Wired article for first bringing me to Epinions. PR is effective sometimes.

Your old music cannot sustain you through a life, not if you're someone who listens to music every day, at every opportunity. You need input, because pop music is about freshness, about Nelly Furtado and the maddeningly memorable fourth track on a first album by a band you saw on a late-night TV show. And no, that fourth track is not as good as anything on Pet Sounds or Blonde on Blonde or What's Going On, but when was the last time you played Pet Sounds? - Songbook by Nick Hornby

IMO, this is the kind of thing that Epinions should be doing more of. Being mentioned in a newspaper or magazine article is every bit as effective as a full page spread, only MUCH cheaper!

now I wonder...

I wonder now how many people get contacted about their reviews. I got a mail from a writer at Smart Money magazine over my review of Schwab one time, wanting to interview me, but I turned him down, of course. The only other contact I've gotten that was initiated by the review target was an e-mail from the people that write my mail client, The Bat. It didn't say much.

Probably the nicest thing was when I sent David Kopay a copy of my review of his book, he phoned me to thank me for it--it was clear he was really touched. Might even get to have beers with him sometime. That sort of made my year.

That exposure is excellent...I agree there should be more of it. I've been surprised when I've done searches for a product I'm rating...to get more info. I just type the name into my browser- and many, many times I get a "read about it on epinions" link.
