Officer Fired For Striking Man Who Ran Into His Daughter

http://www.s-t.com/daily/08-01/08-30-01/a01lo003.htm

A local (off duty) police officer apprehends a suspected drunk driver after said driver hit the officer's daugter on her bicycle. He hits the man while he is apprehending him. The daughter sustains minor injuries. Later, the officer is fired.

I don't approve of an officer hitting a suspect under any circumstances (which is what happened here) but I think many regular citizens might have struck the man if they were in the same situation. Who knows if there are other details that haven't been released? If even a peacenick like myself thinks he would have struck the man for hitting his daughter, I have to wonder if ruining this officer's career is warranted.

my honest opinion is that this man did what any father would do. I don't think he should lose his job-I think that was wrong.

But, when I talked about this with my husband-his view was that because this man was an officer of the law-he is supposed to uphold a higher code of honor and while he didn't think it was "right" that the officer in question was fired-he did understand why.
