| | Re A poll to determine the questions to be on the poll of the soapbox. | | Here are the details on the suggested questions for the poll:
Prior to the incident that caused the Soapbox to be closed, how did you you feel about posting and/or reading in the Soapbox:
a) The Soapbox was an enjoyable debate forum where people respected the community.
b) The Soapbox was an increasingly divisive forum where opposing viewpoints were not always treated respectfully
c) I never/rarely posted in the Soapbox, and therefore have no real opinion on the matter.
B1) I felt the Soapbox was often quite heated, but people generally behaved well
B2) I participated selectively and ignored those threads that I though had gotten out of hand
When describing the Soapbox in the past three months, would you say the Soapbox is (check all that apply):
a) Informative
b) Friendly
c) Combative
d) Unwelcoming
We are seeking solutions to the Soapbox problems of the past that would alow for a debate forum. Which of the following would make you feel as though you had a place to post your opinion without feeling either derided OR excluded:
a) The regular SoapBox forum as it was, with the Report a Post feature in full use (my fave solution, btw)
b) A "hidden" invite only forum, which could possibly exclude people who have contributions to the discussion from participating if they aren't invited.
c) The old SoapBox, with the added caveat that flamers will be banned from it after X number of offenses reported.
d) no SoapBox - we aren't grown up enough to monitor ourselves
e) none of the above

Ok - I'm having fun with poll humor, but I don't want anyone to be offended. Truly, many many people here are all wrapped up and emotionally involved in whats happening with the box.
A few things are clear to me.
Most of us really like most of us - if we didn't care about each other, we wouldn't still be here.
We all have a vested interest in keeping EA around as a place where we can all discuss ideas - even when we have differences of opinion.
In the other disucussion thread we've been all over. I feel like we, as a group, make a lot of progress, then someone posts something angry or accusing and we slide back and start over, but we keep trying.
The idea for a poll was ok - but to have polls about whether to have polls and then about what should be in the poll - it's like having meetings to schedule meetings - its become unproductive.
Nobody can please everyone all the time - but as a group we can try to establish guidelines that make the place comfortable for everyone - or almost everyone.
So - lets see if we can move forward. If the poll is to determine what kind of a debate forum we want - lets just say it - and it shouldn't have to be a secret poll - we should be proud of our ideas.
I'm going to start a new thread - My top 3 list.
I think that everyone with a vested interest should post three things that they want to see in future debate forums. By three things - I don't mean three essays. I mean 3 sentences of 20 words or less each. I mean things like - no name calling.
If we want something - lets all just say what we want and see if we can make it happen - and if you care enough - you'll participate in that thread and see if we can stop TALKING about re-opening the box and actually get it opened.
One more thing - whats a poll cat? Is that like a poll dancer? |

Dat dere's a polecat.
Sorry, I thought this was the fun, blow-off-steam and be-silly thread in response to all the gravity in the other thread. But if someone's going to post a poll, post it already.

I pass Booby Trap, Diamond Girls and BaDaBing on the way to work.
BaDaBing has a neon pole dancer flashing on the building. |
