| | EA Book Club: Want to read together? | | Back when this forum first started, the moderators of it decided (with prompting from Amy) we would pick a book for everyone to read each month and rotate the duties amongst ourselves. The problem is, we all got too busy and didn't get around to starting it.
Well, it's two in the morning and I'm feeling ambitious, so here's the start. I've picked two books because the one might be a little more difficult to find than the other (though they're both available through Amazon).
Here's the plan:
1. We'll read the book(s) between now and October 1.
2. On October 1, I'll open a thread with the book's title as the topic and we can discuss away.
And, of course, any reviews we want to contribute to EPs would be kosher too. I did check--both of these books are in the Epinions database.
My first choice is: Fool's War by Sarah Zettel.
It is my hope that I'll be able to get the author to stop by in October and join in any discusion we might have. Fool's War is Zettel's second published book and was named a Notable Book of the Year by The New York Times.
It is classified as science fiction, but don't make snap judgements based on that classification. It's an intelligent book that tells a good story while exploring such themes as intolerance, religion, and sacrifice.
My second choice is: To Say Nothing of the Dog by Connie Willis
All I know of this book is that I've had many friends tell me it is one of their top ten favorite books of all time. I've yet to hear anyone do less than rave about it. I started the book last night, but was too exhausted to read more than a page.
So, please--join me in reading these books and I look forward to discussing them next month!

| | Sounds good to me. Will others have a chance to suggest books for future book club selections? |

| | The Willis book is great fun.
To balance the scales, however, my husband couldn't read past the first chapter. He said it read like gibberish.
I'm in for one book (the Willis).

| | Bupkiss: Good question. And since I'm only one of four moderators, can I get back to you?
Sure, one book, two books, red book, no book.
Er, sorry. Yes, take your pick.
Here's the link (though, might I encourage folks to follow the Amazon link that resides permanently at the top of this forum?) Fool's War by Sarah Zettel To Say Nothing of the Dog by Connie Willis
I'm feeling a little sheepish as I just realized both picks were sci-fi/fantasty (see, I told you I didn't know anything about the latter pick). But I know the first one, at least, breaks out what is traditionally perceived as science fiction. The latter was recommended to me by someone who doesn't like sci-fi usually and Amazon claims it is a "highly comic romp, or a great, allusive literary game, complete with spry references to Dorothy L. Sayers, Wilkie Collins, and Arthur Conan Doyle?"

| | If our library ever gets its card catalogue up and running again (does anyone want to hear my rant about e-catalogues again?? ) then I'm in. However, I do need to find the books...

| | I'm holding off committing at the moment. I'm not sure how much free time I'll have once classes start this week.
I think it's a great idea though!

| | Yay, they are both at my library! | | Now that I live in a much smaller metro area, my library isn't nearly as comprehensive. I always check there first and save my book buying for the ones they don't have.
I will read at least one.

| | After this week, there are a few passages in Fool's War that seem much more ... urgent?
I realize we don't want to start discussion yet, but some of the main characters practice Islam and because it is a world that is post-Apocolypse (an Apocolypse started in Middle Eastern countries) they face a lot of the harassment that we've been hearing about our citizens facing this week.
