I Need Design Help Please

Soon Jelsoft will be releasing a radically different version of Vbulletin. It will mean my rewriting a bunch of the modifications that we have.

One that is very important to us is the Petz system. The original code is poor, but the concept is cute. I would like us to design a pets system that suits our needs.

Wanna help me brainstorm?

Sara, can you help design new pet graphics?

To start you off, here are some questions:

1. What kinds of pets do you want to have?
2. Would you be satisfied with one type of pet to start with, with the understanding that more would be added later?
3. Do you want to be able to own more than one pet? How many?
4. How often should you have to take care of your pet?
5. How should money be earned that you use to care for your pet?
6. What attributes should pets have?
7. How long a lifespan should pets have? Should they be in real time or simulated time?
8. What should you be able to do with your pet?
9. Should there be a humane society or a place to report bad pet owners?
10. Should pets be able to reproduce?
11. Should you be able to sell your pets offspring to other members?
12. Should there be a limited number of pets available? By this, I mean there would be so many pets in the store for purchase?
13. What kinds of things do you want to be able to buy for your pets?
14. What else do you want from a pets system?

I kinda like it as it is (says she of the Fear of Change crowd) but if you want to add new things, that's cool. I don't have any extra-feature preferences.

The thing is, as the code is written, it probably won't work with the new vb which means we can't upgrade and might have security holes a mile wide discovered at some point. If I have to rewrite anyway, I can always make it suit our needs - even if those needs are to keep it basically the same.

11. Should you be able to sell your pets offspring to other members? - no - adoption only for a small fee.


13. What kinds of things do you want to be able to buy for your pets? food, toys, all the other stuff, pet beds, pet clothes

Don't really care about pet types, but booyah snail sex! I have pictures if Sara needs to recreate it.

Also, the ability to stockpile more stuff would be helpful. By the time you rack up enough stuff to fight, you can't stockpile food.

Mental and physical.

Forever!
Real vs simulated? Well, real day counts but I don't want them to die


8. What should you be able to do with your pet?

Walk it.
Brush it.
Feed it.
Pet it.
Give it haircuts. (if it has hair)
Play with it.
Show it at pet show competition ... like a horse show or dog show or cat show.
Take photographs/snapshots of it.


9. Should there be a humane society or a place to report bad pet owners?

Depends. What would happen to a reported pet and/or pet owner.
Ps. There is no such thing as a bad pet owner, just a pet owner who has made errors in judgement.


10. Should pets be able to reproduce?

Yes! We should also be able to 'fix' them though if we don't want them to ever reproduce.


11. Should you be able to sell your pets offspring to other members?

That would be fun. Pet Breeding


12. Should there be a limited number of pets available? By this, I mean there would be so many pets in the store for purchase?

No.




13. What kinds of things do you want to be able to buy for your pets?

little 'gone fishing' signs and bubbling treasure chests for aquariums,

baskets


14. What else do you want from a pets system?

The ability to view everyone's pet at once.

But don't forget the bunnies!!!

And if Katherine gets lots of pets and forgets to feed them (like she sometimes does with Henrietta) we'll need a place to report her.

Could we have pet baby sitting if we go away - rather than the kennel, could they go to a friend for the weekend. If they get really hungry or sad, can we feed someone elses pet and fine the owner for cruelty?

Maybe a humane society that we can volunteer in? I have been thinking about this, and pets require more then money. They also require time and energy, which are also finite resources that should be tracked.
