Saddam is critical of US rescue efforts

http://www.reuters.com/news_article....StoryID=234823

He says that if this had happened in Iraq, the residents of the area would have had put out the fires and started rescuing people before the firemen arrived. I guess that doesn't say much for the firemen in Iraq.

Is he trying to accuse the US of letting the body count get deliberately high? I'm not sure what the point of all this is, other than he thinks that Iraquis should have been allowed to help in the rescue efforts.

Shake

Sounds to me like someone who has never walked up 100+ flights of stairs or had a 100+ floor building fall on his head.

Well, he also claims in the article that if we would just have transported Iraqis over here then they would have cleaned it up no problem (and that if only we had asked them, they would have been happy to help).

Ummmm... This sounds like blattant propoganda here but in spite of this, it does sound like he is trying to toady up to his people and not to appear as if he is the one responsible to the countries surrounding him.

Boy does it sound pretty poor though. A number of reasons why letting them help would not have been a good idea...

Yeah, untrained civilians are really good at putting out fires fueled by thousands of gallons of jet fuel.

My first thought was along Grace's line: does he have any idea the damage a commercial airliner can do do a 100+ building? Has he ever been in one? (I'm not sure that I have, although I have vague memories of visiting the Sears tower as a child)

He can point out the damage done to Iraq during the Gulf War as if that makes them experts in this type of search and rescue. Meanwhile (as you have said, Ander) he can ignore the fact that we think Iraq could have a hand in this.

I think what he is trying to do is to claim that his country has suffered the same sort of thing, to claim that they have suffered it over a longer period of time, to point this out to the world, to claim that his country isn't the bad guy (to backpedal a *lot* on his previous cheerleader status from when the accident happened), and moreover to claim that they are the good guys while we are just incompetent boobs. Basically he is trying to reclaim victim status in the world because he realizes that he has just lost it.

Ummmmmm... Really goofy stuff to say but it might help his position in the Middle East. Might.

What a FruitLoop! Boy, fire service in Iraq must be really, really slow for him to claim this. And how, pray tell, would ordinary citizens have put out a fire in a 110 story building with no hoses? Hmmmm?

And besides, there have been a number of "just citizens" who helped out with the initial rescue efforts, although I believe it's all professionals now. I remember one story of one man who spent 10 hours digging for his best friend on the 2nd or 3rd day after.
