| | War on Terrorism Helps War on Drugs | | Yesterday I read in our local paper that the drug pipeline from Mexico has been completely halted due to increased security at the borders.
Winning the war against drugs and drug-related crime in the United States may be a favorable by-product of the war on terrorism. |

| | Completely halted? I find that really hard to believe. Curtailed perhaps. |

| | Gotta agree with Erik. I'm not sure it's possible to have security on the ENTIRE border of US and Mexico. Our buddies with the drugs manage to find a way to get in this country by plane, boat, raft, submarine, car, etc.
On top of that, it's a nice thought that all the drugs are imported but unfortunately that's not the case. A ton of them are made right here in the good old USA. I grew up in Miami in the 1970s and 1980s -- I knew plenty of kids who grew their own pot, made their own LSD, etc. |

| | Wow, three cynical responses in a row.
Maybe it's Pollyanna-ish, but I'd like to believe that there might be some positive side effects from the increased security in the air and at our borders, and that a reduced supply of illegal drugs might be one of those positive side effects. |

There are reports the Taliban has lifted their ban on poppy farming, in an attempt to get cash and flood our country with heroin. I suppose they think if the direct attack didn't destoy us, an indirect one might.

| | Maybe it's cutting down on illegal immigration as well... who knows?
I'm not saying that there aren't good things about increased security at our borders, etc. A lot of us have been crying out for that for years and years and years. But I guess the point was that while it may be cutting down on imported drugs, it's doing nothing for the home-grown stuff.
