Um, I know quite a bit about the militia movement, at least in Colorado. I suppose I should explain this -- no, I have not joined a militia, no I have never been to a militia meeting, and no I don't know anyone personally who has admitted to me that they are part of a militia.
I do get lots of knowledge because I'm a huge fan of shortwave radio. Militia-friendly radio shows are huge on shortwave, and they like to jabber a lot on HAM radio.
NATO had nothing to do with it. It's the UN that disgusts a lot of the people who have joined militias. But some of the Black Helicopter theories are just hilarious.
My favorite is that those reflector signs on the interstate (you know, the ones that mark where the shoulder is) are actually directional signs to where secret UN bases off in the middle of nowhere. Blue is for some troops, yellow for others. It's a riot.
Most of these guys seem to be paranoid more than anything else. Yeah, they run off into the woods and play wargames and they're waiting for the government to come in and get them a la Ruby Ridge or Waco. A lot of it has toned down, however, since Clinton left office. Most of the movement isn't really because of what happened at Ruby Ridge or Waco. Most of the militia movement stems from fear that the government is going to take away our Second Amendment rights. The rhetoric has cooled down quite a bit because Bush is an avid Second Amendment proponent.
But, from what I've heard on these radio shows, most of these guys are sane enough to understand that a first strike against the government is idiotic and suicidal. Most of them did not chime in for support after Timothy McVeigh did his deed. They felt he did more to harm the movement than anything else. These guys are waiting for the government to strike first.
Finally, my understanding is that militias are actually small cells, like in bin Laden's group, three or four people together. It is supposed to be a very secret society so as to not allow government moles, etc. into the movement and infiltrate the groups.
Yes, this sounds a lot like terrorists, but I'd not throw them in the same group. The goals aren't the same at all. |
