The January 14 "New Yorker" has a long article about John O'Neill. I just skimmed it quickly, haven't read it through yet, but it looks like that article gives a whole different reason why O'Neill quit -- there was an incident with a briefcase, where he left a briefcase that had classified documents unattended for a few minutes, and when he came back the briefcase had been stolen. According to the article, O'Neill felt that the briefcase incident pretty much killed his chances for advancing much further within the FBI -- and the private sector job that he took instead paid twice as much.
For whatever that's worth.
