| | Epinions gets a rave review in the SF Chronicle | | I came across this in the newspaper yesterday. It was in the Home & Garden section, in a column called "Home on the Web."
The writer loved Epinions. For drawbacks, she said "None."
It's also interesting to see how a "real" consumer approached the site. What we tend to think of as the only important part of the site -- the reviews -- she calls "other comments": Raters, who go by handles instead of real names, judge products on a scale of 1 to 5, adding in words the pros, cons and other comments their fellow buyers might want to know.
Worth reading, I think: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/articl...2/HO171441.DTL |

Sometimes "lengthy", eh?

| | It is an interesting read. Comparing Epinions to other sites, that often invite 'only' comments rather than full-fledged reviews, it is easy to make the assumption that these are just lengthy comments. Isn't a novel just a long short story? Discuss amongst yourselves... |

| | Aargh! She has reduced the artistry of Epinions to "paint by number."
Now I know why I have never "rated" products I haven't reviewed.
In the first place, my Epinion isn't quantifiable--it's individualized.
Plus that, I have no interest in assisting Epinions become any more ubiquitous than it's already become....
There are numerous websites offering "reviews" now--most online shopping sites have them...
Usually the coverage is spotty, and when it exists, it's mundane and incomplete.
That's because most people don't have any sense of fulfillment doing a multiple choice quiz on a product. That's not what Epinions is supposed to be about. |

| | At least she liked the site. Amused me though that she
seems skeptical that we are really all just consumers. And
calling our mostly really detailed reviews, (extended) comments,
how deflating. Sniff.

| | Well, you can now see the epinions target market, and why they prefer quantity over quality. Makes perfect sense to me. |

| | Just curious...did anybody else write to Holly? (Holly's the woman who wrote the extended comment about epinions that was the topic of this thread.)
I did, both to tell her that yes, we are real people writing reviews about the stuff we have and use in our own homes, and to thank her for writing about epinions.
Then I sat back and wondered at myself for doing it. |

| | Since she's not local, I had to forgive her not sending Sajjaks chocolates, but the Godiva she sent was passable. | |
