Reviewed Any Magazines Lately?

On February 4, Epinions apparently added several hundred periodicals to the database. The full list is here.

These aren't general circ magazines. I see a lot of niche and specialty pubs (i.e., Dogs Quarterly and Dolls), but there should be something there for just about everyone.

There are also some comics (Justice League), some porn (Hustler) and just a whole bunch of variety. You could be the first to review something.

Your old music cannot sustain you through a life, not if you're someone who listens to music every day, at every opportunity. You need input, because pop music is about freshness, about Nelly Furtado and the maddeningly memorable fourth track on a first album by a band you saw on a late-night TV show. And no, that fourth track is not as good as anything on Pet Sounds or Blonde on Blonde or What's Going On, but when was the last time you played Pet Sounds? - Songbook by Nick Hornby

My wife just went to the grocery store.

I asked her to pick me up a copy of Hustler.

She wasn't amused.

LegWorld anyone?

They've added a section on erotica (I never noticed that before) in magazines that has a whole suite of Flynt products. As well as something called "Draculina"!

Next they might add some new movie genres. One thing that sells on the Internet is anything to do with "naughty bits." Of course, the word filter would make for interesting word substitutions when reviewing these things.

You probably should have asked for The Justice League. It's not too much different, given the way they draw Wonder Woman.

So that's why my kids like comics so much.

Some of the more eclectic titles will be lucky to get a single review, but the person who does the more mainstream porn is going to get a huge number of hits. I don't think reviewing Hustler is a bad thing. I think reviewing it well is going to be difficult.

Sounds like a write-off to me...

I might. Sounds fun. Plus, just think of all the stuffed shirts one could piss off--without ever uttering a word of profanity.

Hmmmmm...an idea is now germinating.

My wife is back from the store and STILL no porn mags. Man, what's a guy gotta do around here to get a little help in making Epinions.com an EVEN BETTER PLACE to make smart purchasing decisions about beaver shots.

I have full confidence that Jonathan could write a stellar Hustler review, one filled with SCADS and SCADS of consumer-helpin' goodness.

Talking

Don't think I could do justice to Hustler, but I have it on good authority that I could tackle Penthouse...especially the Forum section. :p

Susan- who maybe shouldn't post on such topics after working a 10 hour day

Maybe you should have asked her to pick up The Bisexual Resource Guide instead-and yes that is a magazine that is actually listed on Epinions now.

But in all seriousness now. Is anyone going to actually research a magazine on the internet before they decide to buy it?

Isn't it just as easy-- doesn't it save a step-- by just going to the store and flipping through the dang thing?

I mean, really now. How consumerly helpful is this?

Probably not a general circ magazine, but I'll bet that someone searching for information on Topic X through Google or another search engine might get a hit on that topic through Epinions. If they then trial or subscribe to that pub through an Epinions link, that could be a worthwhile database addition.

This is all speculative, of course, but that would be why I would set it up.

Hmmmmm, vetty interesting. I have turned down my editors hat in Magazines and Newspapers twice now, and sniff, been ignored both times. So, basically I've done near nothing in that category. Now I am intrigued after reading this thread.

Does Draculina suck?

Who will be the first to review Hustler and can it be done in, um, good taste, and what is good taste?

Off to check this out!

Wink What a co-incidence

Hi, Y'all,
I'm new to this board and Epinions.com. Glad to have found both in the midst of a LONG 6 months off work with a back injury.
As a matter of fact, my husband has started buying me TONS of magazines because I am so intellectually stagnant lying around the house like a sack of potatoes.
There are only SO MANY games of Slingo, Sol, etc. one can play on the Internet, only so many soaps before life seems tilted off axis, and only a handful of really good new books out of the tons on the shelves.

Anyway, I am hoping that Epionions will be a creative outlet for me and helpful for the people reading.
( We nurses always have that helpful thing going on, don't we?)

Hubby has recently come home with some of the most unusual magazines. some of them British or Canadian, and the price goes WAY up when it's an import.
I think he's getting desperate. He bought me a $12 magazine about Photography. I'm not seriously interested in photography, so I asked why he bought the magazine for $12.
( It's the principle of the thing).
He said, well, you have a new 35 mm camera, don't you?
Uh, yes, but it came with a perfectly adequate owner's manual, and there are only so many photos I can take of 3 dogs while I am mainly on bedrest.

Our nearby Barnes and Noble has a magazine for every imaginable topic, and some... well, I'm not sure who the target reader is yet. I don't think a majority of the really expensive imports will be on the shelves long enough for me to find out, LOL.

Maybe there are some confused bookstore browsers out there who might find a review via a Google search?
Are publishing houses turning to magazines more in our disposable society, I wonder?

See ya,
Amanda

I'm sure search engine placement on topic level is a key component of this strategy, Amanda. Well, not sure, but pretty it's as good a guess as any.

And, James, I think you'll be shocked to see how many niche publications folks get. I can't even keep up with mine. I usually toss 'em in my suitcase when I travel and read 'em in hotels or while waiting in airports. Somewhere out there is someone interested in worms.

Ain't making no promises about good taste (because I've never professed to have it), or about being the first (because I don't really care who breaks the magazine's hymEnpinion) but I did pick up a review copy today. I think I'll try a different spin on it. I believe that there's an aspect of Hustler that is rarely appreciated, and from which more people should view it.

This could have Great Social Significance.

And, of course and of necessity, I presume Epinions wouldn't list the magazine in the database unless it were ok to excerpt from it at need. Therefore, any profanity or vulgarity incorporated in the review as a result should be no grounds for complaint, provided it isn't gratuitous.

This is going to be fun.

jkk
