John McCain must be happy...

He must be. Why? Because it looks as if he might finally get that campaign finance reform he pushed so hard for in the primaries.

And, we all know how squeaky-clean McCain is. Unless of course one of the reasons he wants it so badly is that he can't be trusted -- just as he can't trust himself not to take soft money.

Seems as if McCain was the favorite of Global Crossing... and seems as if McCain, in turn, was pushing hard for what Global Crossing was wanting.

In general, I support the move for campaign finance reform, but Todd Adams of Indie Scene raises some interesting points.

It smacks of an unseemly ploy to grab political power at someone else's expense.

This is hardly the first attempt, successful or otherwise, at campaign finance. After all, why does soft money exist in the first place? Because of reforms designed to stem the trend of corruption.

Whatever the system, politicians will find a way of mucking it up and making it seem like they are virtuous for doing so. I have faith in them.

The money will get to the candidates, one way or another. There will be so many loopholes open for major contributors while minor contributors will have to go through extra-hassle to make them think "Oh, gee... if it's a hassle to give this guy $25, then it must be a kick in the nuts to give $10,000."
