Making a speech!

My little guy uttered his first words very clearly. As his brother munched on an ice cream cone last night, Devon ran over and yelled "I want that!!!" LMAO Figures that the first thing out of his mouth would be a demand!

Now I am listening carefully to his babble to try to pick out other words.

That's great! Funny, too!

I love it when kids save up their speech and just blurt out entire sentences when we're expecting a word or two.

What fun!

Bridgette, the only thing he ever really said before was "Mamamamamama" which I like to think is for me, but might be just a sound.........lol. He does understand a lot though. He seems to understand so much already, and can answer yes or no by nodding or shaking his head, but no actual words until that moment....lol. He does have a lot to say that I wish I understood, because he is always "talking" his baby talk and he gets so excited over things.........lol. He communicates mostly by pointing and yelling at me to follow him..........lol.

Theeye, he is going to be 15 months on the 21st. A few months younger than when my oldest began talking. At this age, everything to my oldest was "Ba!" LMAO

Cool. Our Poopster is almost 13 months now. He "verbalizes" a lot -- and seems to repeat things that we say -- but I haven't been able to identify any real words. I'm just dying for him to start talking (though my friend with five kids warns me, "just wait 'til he gets a mouth on him").

He does seem to understand quite a few things. He'll come (if he feels like it) when I say "come to Mommy" and he'll usually obey "give it to Mommy".

The other day, our nanny said that she said "Daddy will be home soon" and he stopped playing and turned around and looked at the door!

"I want that" is an absolutely amazing first utterance, though. It's so reminiscent of that joke: a kid says absolutely nothing until he's five years old. Doctors have been consulted; therapists have been hired; nothing seems to help. One morning, the kid looks up from his breakfast and says, with perfect enunciation, "my oatmeal is cold". His mother jumps up in astonishment and says: "Jimmy! You can talk! You can talk! Why did it take so long for you to say anything?" Jimmy shrugs and replies: "Until now, everything was pretty much ok."

I remember my friend's son's first three word sentence (he had been uttering single words for a while). Sitting in his high chair, he had been munching on a bunch of grapes which were now all gone. He handed the now grapeless bunch of stems (which looked a lot like a leafless tree) to his father and said these memorable words: "Daddy tree garbage". We were all very excited.

That's really great. My two year old is at about that same stage. She understands everything so clearly, but refuses to talk . Mommy of course knows exactly what she wants when she wants it, most of the time . Boy do I got a mouthful of baby talk when I don't get her what she wants though. Sometimes with how fresh she acts with me I wonder if I really want her to start talking. Her first words will probably be something like "no mommy". Or some other very fresh phrase, LOL.

Congratulations on the first words

Monica

LOL, my younger sister was like that. She didn't say a word until 2 1/2, then started speaking in complete sentences. I guess with me as an older sister, she never got the chance to talk.

My Shane was an early talker - 3-4 sentences by his first birthday - but he didn't start crawling until he was 11 months and didn't walk until 18 months. Babies seem to pick one skill at a time to work on (or so his doctor said). They all seem to even out later on . . . and after watching one of my friends who had a child that started walking at 7 months, I'd trade early talking with early walking any day of the week.

Deb
who started a new job the same month her son started walking and, 16 years later, still gets exhausted thinking about it

amykhar has a spectacular aura aboutamykhar has a spectacular aura about

My now almost three year old had a sentence that she said over and over again. We couldn't figure out what she was saying for the longest time, but once we did, it really made me pay a bit more attention to what I was saying. Her first real sentence was:

"I said no"
