| | One of the gifts I received recently from my husband was a collection of certificates entitling me to time-off. Each certificate was for a different length of time. Today I decided to cash in the one that runs from 16:30 - 06:00.
It's not that I have anything special to do, in fact we are snowed in and I couldn't get out the driveway even if I wanted to, but I think that's the whole point of the certificates. I plan to just relax, do a little surfing, maybe play a session of Age of Empires, a little uninterrupted reading, ... etc. I think hubby is even planning on making dinner (which in all honesty I must say he does fairly often anyway), but it's an extra treat tonight.
I asked him if the certificate include beverage service and he said, "you're pushing your luck" It was worth a try!
Katherine <- no worries

| | We have 'pretend Mommy's not home today" days where I hole up in the basement with my computer and Daddy is in charge of all official answers.

| | At times my work schedule gets truly horrendous. Twelve to fourteen hour days. Six or seven days a week. Not to mention the extra stuff that I squeeze in like the emergency repairs, unwanted but mandatory social obligations, and other stuff that just can't wait. I end up feeling used, abused, and taken for granted.
So every now and then we have a "pretend Daddy dropped dead" day. I get to lie down in a box in the livingroom, and my wife and kids gather around but leave me alone. They also say nice stuff like, "Gee, he looks almost lifelike."
The family enjoys it because they get to plan all the things they're going to do with the insurance money. And I get to rest.
So, a good time is had by all.

Rich | If you were willing to unlock the liquor cabinet, I'm sure a few of us would be willing to speak some words (probably "nice stuff") over your 'carcass'...:-)

| | That's great, Katherine!
(Rich, I'd prefer another use of metaphor, if you don't mind )
Don and I do try to give each other days or part of days off, but, I think a more specific agreement might be fun. I get time off, or I'd never be board posting, but I'm always feeling guilty. (Yes, I understand that I'm entitled to it, doesn't make the nagging feeling go away.)
You're inspiring me.
Andrea

Unfortunately, English is my only language.

| | I am a firm believer in mommy only time. I usually take at least a half day every other weekend or so for myself-I've discovered that this is the ONLY way I can go see certain movies~ I also think it gives daddy a good idea of what my life is like

| | Isn't this what grandparents are for??
I've counted myself pretty lucky. From the time my son was 6 weeks old, my parents have taken him away for one weekend a month. The first few times they did this I was frantic. Now it's a weekend to look forward to. Rick and I get to act like newlyweds and we can invite over those few friends we have left who dislike kids. My son loves it and wishes he could go more often.
I hope you enjoyed your evening, Katherine. It does sound heavenly.

Oh well.
It was worth a try, but the aftermath just isn't worth it. Two days later I'm still cleaning up after my evening off.

You'll never have quite the same appreciation of a night off without kids.
(Mind you, I'm not suggesting you have them--no one should have children unless they're absolutely convinced they want them. Much, much better to not have them.)

Definitely 100% worth it. We've often said so to each other even in the middle of a night interrupted for the umpteenth time by wailing ... and when suddenly drenched in a shower of completely unexpected vomit. Absolutely, no question about it at all. | |
