Hopefully this is the right thread, now. (dunno how that happened.....)

Considering the quality of AOLusers, I don't have a hard time doubting that these people could have easily clicked a button and ordered something without knowing it.

It's been a long time since I've seen AOL, but it wouldn't surprise me if they had 'one click shopping' buttons on their pages....they already have a main-line to the user's creditcard account, so it wouldn't take much for 'way too easy to buy something by clicking on the screen' to mix badly with 'user likes to just click things on the screen'.

In the end it does become the (un)usability experts at AOL's responsibility (or the people in charge of actually hiring some usability experts) to make to neigh impossible to accidentally buy something accidentally.

But I don't necessarily trust the quoted AOLusers (especially for such a informationally sparse article) as being completely innocent.

(Maybe AOL should hire SONY's unusability experts. The guys who made that almost completely unusable LCD brick remote for a receiver/amplifier. The one with volume physical buttons on it, but you had to navigate with 3 clicks in order to change the channel, and the auto-timeout wasn't configurable and turned the screen off (so you had to do 3 clicks again) after like 2 seconds. So much for channel surfing...I suppose in Japan they only have one channel and it has VERY variable volume. At least the SONY people would keep the AOLusers from ever finding a way to purchase something.)

Wow. When I had AOL... like a million years ago, my dad was the main account holder. I clicked on something I wanted, and it automatically billed my dad! My dad had to have his credit card company fight the charges. I was in soooo much trouble over that, but I had my credit card out and was about to put my info in, but it never asked for it. I figured they would send me a bill (silly me). I can't believe they haven't fixed this problem yet!

Oh gee, that makes me feel great. Dissed on the EA board.

I happen to LIKE aol. Maybe I'm the only person in the universe, but I'm fairly intelligent, consider myself pretty savy when it comes to the internet, and haven't ever bought anything just by clicking on one of those stupid popups. And I use AOL exclusively when I'm at home.

:p
