What gives you the rush?

You know the feeling? You get it on the job when you're really excited about something.

For me, it comes when we send a book to press or when I'm able to do something outside of my job description well (for example, I get really excited when I'm able to make a sale, because I'm not in sales, don't have access to most prices, and have little direct contact with customers except when they serve as content resources).

What about your job gives you a rush?

Easy.

Busy season....when the orders start flowing.

We're just about to hit our peak for the year now. We do half a year's business in March, April & May. Our big catalog is hitting company's mailboxes now....I'm pacing aimlessly around the building, supercharged with adrenilline, checking fax machines for orders are they there yet??, listening for phones to start ringing off the hook, in general making a pest of myself.

And yes, I'm excited every morning I wake up thinking, this may be the day that the rush starts.

I has usually been the completion of a major project (catalog, magazine issue, etc.).

I wonder what it will be at my next job?

Yeah, but that's when you find the typos you missed during 102 rounds of proofing.

A GREAT CAREER IS CLOSER THAN YOU THINIK!

125,000 copies, this statement was on the cover. It went from our place to the printer directly to the mailer and then to all the people. Then we saw it.

The font we used was so narrow, that the I and K blended together. We still think almost no one noticed.

My rush comes in the last week of the month when the revenue and productivity models start coming into clear resolution. Did we make that number? Is it a race or did we blow it out? How high can we go and in what area?

That - and nailing a high level presentation. Driving to an airport after one such meeting a year ago, one of my colleagues said, "You know, we're not going to get this deal, but I would bet the company we can do better than they can."

My reply? "You just did."

And we won. But there's certainly a rush there.

Your old music cannot sustain you through a life, not if you're someone who listens to music every day, at every opportunity. You need input, because pop music is about freshness, about Nelly Furtado and the maddeningly memorable fourth track on a first album by a band you saw on a late-night TV show. And no, that fourth track is not as good as anything on Pet Sounds or Blonde on Blonde or What's Going On, but when was the last time you played Pet Sounds? - Songbook by Nick Hornby

That only counts as a rush for me when the numbers are good.

It's the opposite-of-rush (what's the giant sucking sound?) otherwise.
