| | Just Read an Interesting Article About Net Use at Work | | It's My Internet, I can do what I want looks at on-the-job surfing stats. Most of you who surf at work are goofing off at Quote: |
shopping, entertainment, personal e-mail, sports, chat rooms, job searches and game playing
| sites.
Teachers and manufacturing workers seem to be into porn quite a bit.
Government employees seem prone to spyware.
Employee surfing can cause legal problems for companies - if the employees hang out in naughty places, BUT
(here's my favorite sentence in the article Quote: |
And while a knee-jerk reaction might be to seriously restrict personal Internet access of employees, employers should bear in mind that some freedom actually can boost employee morale and can lead to increased employee productivity in certain circumstances.

| | Re Just Read an Interesting Article About Net Use at Work | | Well, at risk of being "picked up", I know that I've tried to limit myself to taking EA/mail breaks. A couple of times a day, I stop what I'm doing, and relax a little by checking out what's going on here and checking my email. I don't smoke, I don't stand around gossiping for hours, and I know that little brain dump for a few minutes helps me get back to where I need to be to concentrate on WORK stuff.

...here's my favorite sentence in the article.... | My apologies for changing topic....
You're a journalist, my opportunity to get a professional opinion. Do you think this is a well written, effective article? Seems like one of those articles where a guy is trying to come up with a story, but doesn't want to take too much time to look at the data, or maybe is trying to make something out of the data thats not there.
Read the article several times, and I still can't find anything that says how big a problem this is. Are employees wasting 2% of their time online or 22% of their time? How much bandwidth $ are being wasted? |

| | Re Just Read an Interesting Article About Net Use at Work | | Big article in the WashPost this week about much the same topic. People are not only surfing the web, they're searching job sites. So are managers.
Coincidentally, I read an article in (I think) Newsweek within the last few weeks that talked about how people are multi-tasking more. They described the Google geeks as having two systems open with big monitors for each. One display shows whatever code they're hammering on, the other shows a game or a chat session or whatever. Google decideed to encourage people to freely take breaks when they need a mental health few minutes. |

| | Re Just Read an Interesting Article About Net Use at Work | | Neal, it really looked like a rehash of a lot of the stuff we've seen before. But, there were some interesting things in there that I hadn't seen before. I've never seen info on types of goofing off based on profession.
And, I had to give the guy props for not trying to cut off net access at work
But, no. It wasn't the best job I've seen on a story.

| | Re Just Read an Interesting Article About Net Use at Work | | I code better when I can multitask. I don't know why, but I'm more relaxed, open and creative when I can work frentic bursts like I do at home. I become engrossed in the code and tune everything out at times, and then I go online and recharge.
Coding has been a hobby for me for so long, that I still do my job like it's recreation. And, I guess I'm lucky that I can do it this way because I'm not losing my passion for it.
I'm just happy that I don't work for an obsessive company that monitors online time.

| | Re Just Read an Interesting Article About Net Use at Work | | When I get in "the zone" I am too focused to surf. When I am outside of the zone, I multitask, and I need to split my attention.
