A business-appropriate "thank you"

Most of the ladies know that DH nearly lost his job as of 6/23, but that he has managed to not only keep it, but get a raise out of the deal. DH's supervisor, "J" really, really went to bat for him. First, he went to bat with the local HR to keep the proposed pay cut to a minimum, then with the corporate HQ's main HR people to get a raise. (It was a crazy two weeks!)

We really want to do something nice for "J" when all the dust settles. He will no longer be DH's supervisor, but he will still be with the company. Any ideas for something nice, and appropriate?

Re A business-appropriate "thank you"

It's an unusual situation.
I think that you should not do something involving money - sending a gift or taking him out to dinner - he went to bat for DH to keep his sallary, and I don't think spending on him is necessary. Honestly, I would probaly have DH write a letter or a nice card saying how much he enjoyed working for "J" and how much he appreciates that "J" went to bat for him.
Everyone likes gifts, but I know that a heartfelt thank you letter/note would mean more to me than any gift could.

Re A business-appropriate "thank you"

Combine both ideas...a really nice note along with a gift certificate to a nice restaurant. He's not his boss anymore so it should be appropriate.

As a general rule, the better it felt when you said it, the more trouble it's going to get you into.
