| | Windows XP | | Can someone clear something up for me?
What are the real differences between Windows XP Pro and Home edition?
Can Home edition connect to a server/network?
Is XP Pro required to sign onto a domain? |

| | The Home version can connect to a network. I believe pro is required to sign onto a domain though. But, I'll have to wait for a bigger geek than myself to come along to verify that though.

| | ah - Ok. I thought Home was good, but at work I do need to sign onto a domain - though I realize now that I don't know what that means.
I know what a network is.
I know what the server is.
What is the domain? Is that what lets us have our company name in our e-mail addresses? |

| | Kim Kommando gave an explanation not too long ago. I might be misquoting her, but it sounded like XP Pro and XP Home aren't that different, XP Pro loads all of Windows funcionality on the computer whereas XP Home requires the user to do a lot of hunt and searching and downloading to get all of the functionality.
I'm not too entirely sure that I've got it right, though, because she's also said a few times that XP Pro is good for instance A and XP Home is good for instance B. |

| | Thanks. I think that Amy may be right and the main difference is the domain access - and apparently I need that. |

| | I'm asking because I purchased a new PC for work. I bought XP home because I thought it was enough and that it would save money. I know that Home can connect to the network. Apparantly, I'm wrong, and I needed XP Pro in order to log onto our domain.
No biggie, I can buy the upgrade, but I really thought Home would be sufficient. |

| | Yes - Mr. Bill is quite clever.
Can't answer the other questions because I still don't think I really know what a domain is. Apparently we have one though.
I just ordered the upgrade so all is well.
Thanks! |

| | I understand very little about computers or even the vocabulary used when talking about computers. However, I am able to use XP Home and connect to my work server which is Novell. I can do grades etc online both at home and at school. One of my co-workers set it up for me. So, maybe????? you can but just need to know the correct combinations to make it work? |

I was able, through a VPN, to connect my Windows XP Home computer to the Windows 2000 office network. |

| | There are three possibilities, Wormie.
One is that Novell actually doesn't support XP Home. It might work, or it might not, but they won't support it, so it's possible that your network monkeys just refuse to deal with it.
Or, it has to do with NTFS file encryption, which isn't supported in Home.
Or, your network monkeys like to use a remote to install software, etc. Since you mentioned that your boss monitors your email, etc. I'm assuming it's this last one... they can't remotely connect to your PC and see all that you are doing, etc. with Home. Big Brother can't watch you. | | |
