This weekend, I pulled the Tivo hard drive out and copied the data over to a new, larger hard drive. Next weekend, I will add a second hard drive to get even more storage space.
This is really a very easy project - especially if you've ever installed a computer hard drive before.
How to get the old hard drive out and put the new one back in.
Now, it's possible to take your old hard drive and copy it over to two new hard drives at the same time. But, I prefered to break things down into steps to make sure it worked.
The software you need to do it is an
MFS tools boot CD
(You'll need to burn that iso image to a bootable cd. If you've never burned an iso cd, give a yell and I'll help you find instructions for the software you already have available on your computer.)
Now, the next step is to take your Tivo hard drive, and your new, bigger hard drive, (I used 160GB drive) and put them in your home computer as follows.
1. Disconnect your normal computer hard drive (you don't need it for this process and disconnecting it keeps it safe)
2. Follow Step 10 upgrade option #3 of these instructions
You don't need the prior steps. Once you get the hard drives connected and boot up from the boot disk, you only need to type one command. Running it to move my 80 GB Tivo drive to a 160 GB drive took about 6 hours. So, warn your family that they'll be tivoless for the day.
3. Put your new hard drive in the Tivo and turn it on. Don't be scared that it takes a while to start up. That's just a Tivo thing.
4. Take your original Tivo hard drive and stick it on a shelf somewhere as a safe backup in case something ever goes wrong with your system.
(If you want to add a second hard drive later, it's going to take mere minutes and again requires running one command.)
