| | Re I Was Bad, and I'm Not Sorry | | I really wanted the charcoal grey one, but all they had was the demo so I was bummed.
Speaking of Razrs, do you guys have battery issues? Nick and I have had ours for about a year, and the batteries started needing to be charged almost every night a couple months ago. I got new batteries, and they were great for a while, but now I'm having issues again. Not quite every night yet, but I'm having to charge more than I think I should since I don't even talk on it much. When I went in to talk to the Verizon people, the guy just kinda shrugged and said Razrs are known to have bad battery life around a year old and basically there was nothing they could do about it, and it wasn't covered under the warranty, except for 25% of the price. I haven't been back since I got the new batteries, but it's really annoying having to charge all the time.

n iPhone news, Jobs said Apple will discontinue one of the two models sold since late June. The remaining version, with 8 gigabytes of storage, will now sell for $399, or $200 less than before.

Probably waiting for version 2 though. I get to upgrade and the boy gets the hand me down.
Some tech stuff, I wait for. Other tech stuff is just too much fun to own early when its still cool.

I think that's fair

| | Re I Was Bad, and I'm Not Sorry | | You're a lot more easy going than many of the posters on the Apple forums.
Early adopters always pay the most but a 33% drop in the first 60 days is really big, especially for a product that is supposedly so successful. Cries of being gouged are not entirely without merit, if the iPhone is as hugely successful as the hype has made it out to be.
Unfortunately, that may not be the case. Jobs set a goal of selling one million iPhones in its first 90 days on the market, which ends on September 30. But some analysts are saying that Apple was sitting on an inventory of more than 250,000 iPhones just before the price cut, which would collaborate earlier stories that iPhone sales fell sharply after the opening weekend.
I think even at $399 it is still priced too high for mass-market success with one network to choose from. The MacHeads won't have a problem with whatever Apple charges, but if their representation in the computer market applies to phones that's only something like four percent. I suspect the actual number is going to be less than that. For someone who isn't a MacHead, is an iPhone worth more than twice the final price of a Blackberry? I think if the answer was yes we would see a lot more than 4% of computer buyers choosing Apple.
I know I'm a consistent critic of Jobs but I think they really screwed up on pricing the iPhone. I think they would have been much better off over the long term to price this phone on a mass market level ($300 net at launch, <$200 net after 60-90 days), get it on every network possible and make their money (and it would be in the billions) on games, ringtones and songs purchased exclusively through iTunes. That would also have strengthened Apple's hand in the negotiations its having with iTunes's content providers.

| | Re I Was Bad, and I'm Not Sorry | | The price drop was extreme when compared to other tech products in this time span. But, I'm a tech nut and I fully understand that new products will get cheaper and have better features over time. It's like car lovers who buy the car when it's first released instead of waiting for the end of the model year.
For me, I get pleasure from playing with new technology. Is it financially prudent? No. Not for me in many ways. But, when it comes to computers or computer like gadgets that I adopt early, I frequently buy the next version as well if I like the product. Then, some lucky person gets my hand-me-down. My son will get my iPhone. My brother-in-law got my old 30 GB video iPod.
I spent a very long time not being able to buy ANY technology goodies. So, right now, I am just thankful that I was able to indulge myself on this toy. I guess normal women would be doing it with shoes or jewelry.
with regards to Apple, I think some people love it in part because it is priced out of the low-budget market. It's sort of like people who like to buy a Mercedes or BMW because it's a sign of success to some degree.

| | Re I Was Bad, and I'm Not Sorry | | People routinely buy expensive new cars at retail price. You drive it off the lot and suddenly it's only worth the wholesale price, thousands of dollars less.
Yet people keep buying new cars. The iPhone is somewhat unusual for other phones and electronics, but much larger drops in value are built into other markets, and are tolerated every day.
Of course, I would never buy a new car. But I assume iPhone price-drop detractors wouldn't either. |

| | Re I Was Bad, and I'm Not Sorry | | My oldest son would love to have an iPhone, but can't justify the price. OTOH, he got an email inviting him to submit his resume for a Mac Genius position and the FIRST thing out of his mouth was, "I bet they'd give me a discount on an iPhone."
Gotta love it. Doesn't even have a phone screening, much less an interview yet and he wants a discount on an iPhone.

| | Re I Was Bad, and I'm Not Sorry | | I met with the regional head of Apple Education last week and finally got to play with an iPhone in person. From an HCI geek's perspective it's really a great to see all the little innovations that took more than a little thought. |

Apple on Monday dispelled some of the concerns that have gathered around sales of the new iPhone as it announced that 1m of the gadgets had been sold by last weekend.

| | Re I Was Bad, and I'm Not Sorry | | My son had his initial phone screening last night. He'll be getting a phone call from a tech person later this week.
As far as he's concerned, one step closer to that iPhone. He's so cute when he gets excited. I hope this comes through. I think he'll be a really good Mac Genius. He complains about how dumb some people can be, but he explains computer issues in plain English better than anyone I've ever met. Certainly better than any tech support line I've ever called.

| | Re I Was Bad, and I'm Not Sorry | | Not a clue. He's just thinking discount, though. When he did Mac laptop telephone tech support, he got discounts right away -- and points for selling stuff (like warranties and peripherals) that let him get goodies. He liked that job and it will show in the next interview. He'd like being a Mac Genius even more, because he'd get to have his hands on the equipment instead of just telling people what to do. He's a hardware techie at heart.
He'd also like the fact that he'd have the opportunity to learn new things - another thing that won't hurt him in the interview. School wasn't his strong point, but show him something technical once and he's got it.
His next phone call is Monday afternoon. They sent him a list of potential questions and a list of hardware and software to study up on. He looked at the list and said, "I worked with nearly all of that at the telephone tech support job."
That and the fact that he considers the equipment he's currently repairing to be far inferior to Mac's shouldn't hurt him. He's really hoping for a chance at a Mac Genius job.

This really sucks for those people who paid tons of money for an unlocked phone.

| | Re I Was Bad, and I'm Not Sorry | | From what I've skimmed, hasn't someone figured out a software hack to unlock the phones? And some sites have the software for free? Then no biggie for them.
Sucks for the rest, though. But if they want to claim they never expected such a thing to happen, well, I've got this great little palace down here just looking for a buyer....

| | Re I Was Bad, and I'm Not Sorry | | From everything I've read, you can recover from the software unlocking hacks. No idea about the kid who used the hardware hack though. My phone was hacked to allow additional applications. The update didn't hurt it a bit - just deleted the apps as I knew it would. The hackers will figure out a way to get applications back on soon enough.
