| | I'm running a wired/wireless system on a Belkin 1000 series router. We've been experiencing increasingly frequent outages which usually, but not always, resolve after power cycling the modem and router.
Comcast tech spent over an hour tweaking the modem last week -- didn't help. He says there were modem issues, but that the main problem is that the router is out of date. I think he's probably right. The router is so old that Belkin doesn't even have a firmware upgrade for it.
We need to be able to connect
2 Win XP desktops which are currently wired (but I could have my son put in wireless cards if necessary)
1 Mac desktop - wireless
1 Vista laptop - wireless
2 Mac laptops - visit from time to time, don't live here
the occasional visiting relative with a laptop
PS3
iPhone
Wii
My tech support son tells me that I need to look at 802.11n routers.
My personal experience with Belkin tech support makes me want to stick with that company, but I'm willing to consider other companies with good tech support (because my son works 60 hrs/week)
Recommendations?

| | I've got a plain old Linksys, and installed one at my church. I can't tell you anything about their support because I've never had to contact them for anything - no problems at all.

| | We've got a Linksys, too, and if you do have to call, they're great. (Once you actually connect to a human that is, LOL.)

| | I hate linksys routers with an undying passion. I used to spend half my life rebooting ours. I LOVE our Airport Extreme. Yes, it cost more. But the darn thing just works and works very well.

| | I've only had to reset mine once since February, but that's because there was a storm and surge and other stuff going on and I had to reset everything. but turns out it was cablevision's fault (naturally) in the end.

| | MJ, Linksys gives me problems if I run more than one kind of operating system on the network. If I run all Windows boxes, I'm generally ok. But if I add in a linux or a mac box, Linksys hangs often.

| | We had a Linksys originally and I loved their customer support, but that one wasn't compatible with the Macs we added and the research I did told me that their newer models wouldn't be either.
Amy,
You're running Windows AND Mac on an Airport Extreme? I'm not giving up my Windows computer any time soon. Neither is tech support kid with 2 computers and a PS3. How is Airport's tech support? Got to have tech support, kid works 60 hrs/week.
Margo,
What operating systems are you running on that D-link? I have to be able to run multiple OS through the same router. Comcast assures me that the modem can handle it.

| | Yes. We mostly have Windows computers. I have my mac, the AppleTV and the two iPhones, but the other computers are Windows - both wired and wireless. I've never needed tech support. I plugged it in and it worked. It's easiest to configure on the Mac though. Run Airport utility from there. I can always do basic tech support for ya too
We have an Xbox, a Playstation 3 and other even our DVR hooked into it.

Recommendations? | We have two Mac laptops (wireless), two Dell windows laptops (wireless), 4 windows desktops (vista and XP, only one is wireless), two iphones, a Wii, a Slingbox, a Windows Home Server, and a wireless HP printer that have been connected at various times to our Dlink 655 "n" router. Also use a Magicjack phone adapter on one PC and also use Skype from a PC to make VOIP calls through the router. Not the cheapest router, but has worked well.
(Seems like I've done my part to keep the economy going.) |

| | Gee, I just have a simple set up on my DLink wbr-1310, one laptop and desktop running Windows XP and a Wii.
My brother comes to visit and connects easily with my security info and who knows what he's running at any given moment. Although I know it's not a Mac OS.

| | Tech support son says he can set up an Airport extreme in his sleep. He also claims they are more reliable than Dlink. He won't comment on Belkin. He wants the Airport. He may or may not be able to get me a discount. Discount would be nice. They're distinctly pricier than the Dlink 655, but I'd cheerfully pay it not to be interrupted in mid-whatever. Typically something very important or that will cause big problems with a paranoid person.

| Yep. That's the one live-in tech support wants and Amy recommends. My husband can actually beat that price with his government discount at the Apple store, though. My son is supposed to see if he can beat the government price for me through his employer.
Looks like it will do everything we need and I'd rather pay more now than be unhappy. The Dlink looks good and I was happy with my Belkin until very recently (it's OLD). Both are cheaper than the Airport, but not so much with the government discount.
