| I can't think of any reason they wouldn't be acceptable. The objection has always been that since life begins at conception, to destroy a fertilized ovum or developing embryo is morally equivalent to destroying a more developed fetus or infant. No conception = no independent life form, so it shouldn't be any more morally objectionable than using adult stem cells or stem cells from cord blood -- both of which are not only acceptable, but encouraged as an alternative to embryonic stem cells.

I think the Monty Python bit refers to the "sin of Onan." I have no idea whether there is any doctrine in any religion against messing with gametes. I don't know if the actual "sin" had anything to do with the cells. |

I forgot to mention that the cells they're talking about are NOT gametes. They are "spermatogonal" cells -- the cells from which sperm are formed. Wikipedia has as good an explanation as anybody if you care, but basically, sperm only have half the complement of chromosomes needed to create a human cell. The spermatogonal cells have a full set. A series of cell divisions occurs to make sperm, but the spermatogonal cell apparently has the capability to turn into something entirely different if it's interrupted in the process of becoming sperm.
Which leads to a whole 'nother set of really bad puns.

So far they've acquired the cells for the research while in the process of doing biopsies for other reasons. Getting donors for wider research might be tricky, but I would hope that a man who has moral objections to the use of embryonic stem cells would be willing to put himself on the line, so to speak, to further the cause of research which isn't morally objectionable to him.

It might not be hard to find participants if there was monetary benefits, what with the rate of unemployment going up. Men might be open to earning money from research facilities if they get the sack.
