Question Microsoft and .NET

What do you think of their latest business venture?

My initial reaction is:

* yawn *

You?

Andrea

I think the most important thing they are trying to attempt is to get chats, scheduling, calendars, messaging, and all that other stuff organized and constructed in ways to "simplify" extranet and internet access to information. Mobile offices, WAN communication, traveling salesforces, working at home, etc.

Videoconferencing is a big thing, now that travel is iffy and annoying for businesspeople. However, the companies that would consider videoconferencing might not settle for a ball-camera on a computer and will instead go for high-end systems like big-assed HDTV or new holographic technologies.

It's enormous..

Not to be a naysayer - pluckyduck - but this is an enormous issue, well for me it is anyway.

Really this has nothing to do with chat, bbs, universal login, or whatever everyone is saying this will effect. At the heart of it this is the Microsoft answer to Java in the middle tier for web designers/developers. My shop has been arguing over whether to go .Net or Java as the standard for 3 months now. Can you even imagine how annoying that is? But it is a big issue.

Microsoft has the edge on the gui scripting (with ASP - cause it's free of course & jsp is a bit slower (don't even MENTION cold fusion and the fact that it is actually faster (well it is for smaller sites anyway))) side of things and are doing well with the backend (SQL being a reasonable price for the performance) now Microsoft ups the ante by compiling ASP (Java is also compiled) which will make it a natural for filling in at the middle tier as well.

"Many Web developers embraced Microsoft's Active Server Page (ASP) technology and have used it widely to build Web applications. Now ASP .Net is here to provide a new generation of dynamic Web sites. ASP .Net, available through the .Net SDK, provides an object-oriented method for creating and interacting with Web pages. Those of us familiar with ASP will find a lot of similarities in ASP .Net, but those likenesses are primarily on the surface. A deeper investigation reveals the power of ASP .Net."

"To really excel with ASP .Net and the rest of .Net, it is important to remember that everything is an object--everything. Also, ASP .Net pages are compiled initially at runtime, so the first load of a page may prove slow, but all additional loads will be very quick. Finally, since the pages are compiled, the ASP .Net specific code for items such as controls are automatically converted to vanilla HTML."

So, YEAH it is boring. Of course it's boring... it has nothing to do with the end user. But as far as technologies go - being a Microsoft bigot, I am totally stoked that I don't have to jimmy code anymore to get it to do what I want to do. Very sweet stuff... and the directions seem almost limitless at present.

Microsoft has pulled it off again

Red face Yawn

For me it is just another thing to learn well to enhance my biz skills and enrich my offerings to potential clients. I think that like everything else it will become an issue of those who believe and use it, and those who fight it and stay with what's out there.

No big deal either way on my end.
