US congressman the next in line to forget he packed a handgun

"Apparently the congressman had left a handgun in his briefcase and forgot it was in there and took it to the security checkpoint, where it was detected and they detained him briefly to make sure he had no ill intent as they should do," Jahr said.

This is just stupid.

I've taken guns on planes before -- it is perfectly legal so long as you declare the gun at the ticket counter. They take the gun, have it inspected, tag it, and put it in with secure baggage and you have to show an ID to pick it back up at baggage claim.

I can't even begin to understand how you'd forget that you packed one. I don't care if you're a MoC or not.

I think we can safely say that selective memory loss is a key component of being a legislator.

No... I believe that he forgot it. Either that, or he was doing the very stupid thing of testing the TSA.

Re: US congressman the next in line to forget he packed a handgun

Can someone who forgets where his handgun is located be trusted to keep it locked up, with ammunition locked in a separate location, in case there are small children around?

In our gun-worshipping society, it might not be politically correct to ask that question.

I know he won't lose his license.

But I hope this misguided gunowner has the common sense to realize that he is either too careless to own a gun at all, or to exercise more vigilance in the future.

Or not. I mean, it isn't the unexpected question from those who are terrified of anyone having the right to defend themselves.

Of course, you'd have to ask the question of why would a small child be granted access to a MoC's briefcase.

From my experience children don't wait to be granted access, every item on the planet is fair game.

Looks like he’s facing at least a misdemeanor charge:

From John Hostettler's bio

Quote:
John and his wife, Beth, live in Blairsville with their four children, Matthew, Amanda, Jaclyn and Jared.
As he was born in 1961, I think it's pretty safe to say that some of them might be small children. Although, he was married in 1983, so one of them could be as old as 20.
