The Incredible Weirdness of Other Cultures

http://nytimes.com/2004/04/23/intern...ia/23JAPA.html

The Japanese Government is going to bill the freed hostages for the airfare to bring them home. Everyone hates them, and they've gone into hiding.

Re: The Incredible Weirdness of Other Cultures

This is worse than the Brits charging freed innocent prisoners room and board for the time they spent in jail!

Re: The Incredible Weirdness of Other Cultures

Other cultures probably think that it’s incredibly weird that our culture says that it’s perfectly acceptable for uninsured children to live in poverty while the rich get tax cuts. Go figure.

Re: The Incredible Weirdness of Other Cultures

(BTW, citation on the above I mentioned: http://www.sundayherald.com/40592 The Labour Home Secretary is trying to get Parliament to pass a law that will charge freed innocent prisoners about 3000 pounds per year they were incarcerated, for room and board.)

Re: The Incredible Weirdness of Other Cultures

Anyone else remember all the yellow ribbons we had out in 1979-1980 for our hostages in Iran?

Yes, Erik. The US sucks.

But now we know other people suck along with us.

IIRC, you'll get a bill if you have to be rescued while climbing the Alps, too. Personal responsibility running rampant!

Re: The Incredible Weirdness of Other Cultures

I honestly can't disagree with the government billing them. They were told not to go to Iraq and did so anyway. Now, I think the ridicule and shaming is a bit much, but not the charge for the flight.

By disobeying the advisory not to travel, they may have been brave, but they also risked the lives of others who had to save them.

Was there an Entebbe-style raid that I missed somewhere? According to all the reports I saw, they were released.

Only if suckyness and weirdness the same thing. FWIW, I don’t think that we suck. We’re sort of a big non-sucky dysfunctional family. Okay, so I stopped making sense a long time ago...
