| | How dare they say that!!!! | | Ok, I need some help with this one. South Beach Diet’s attack on beer erroneous- nutritionists Quote:
The best-selling "South Beach Diet" book slams beer and bans drinking it, saying it is high in maltose, a form of sugar.
The trouble is, there is no maltose in beer. Maltose, from barley malt, is found in beer only in its early brewing stages and is eliminated when yeast converts it to alcohol and carbonation. Budweiser, Bud Light, Michelob, Michelob ULTRA and all major-selling Anheuser-Busch beers contain no maltose. | Ok. So the beer people are mad at the South Beach people for saying that beer is bad because the maltose causes "beer belly". The beer people say there is little to no maltose in beer. Ok, I'm fine with that. But..... it seems to me that whether or not there is maltose in beer, and whether or not maltose causes "beer belly", most people would believe that somehow "beer" causes "beer belly". If beer doesn't cause beer belly, than shouldn't the arguement be with whoever is using the term "beer belly". Maybe we should call it "big rolly polly belly" instead of "beer belly". Or maybe we should blame the free peanuts and pretzels at the bar. I really don't care if there is maltose in beer or not (maybe I should), but I find it very amusing that there is this sudden outrage by the beer companies because the S. Beach Doctor said that beer causes beer belly. |

| | Re: How dare they say that!!!! | | There's no such thing as "beer belly."
Many men just tend to carry their weight up front. And the calories in beer are from alcohol, not carbs. Alcohol is something like 7 calories per gram. Carbs are about half that. Fat is 9 per gram.
So, if you're taking in a lot of calories, you'll likely gain weight. And if you're one of those guys who carries it up front, you'll get a belly. But you can't really blame the beer. |

| | Re: How dare they say that!!!! | | The Irish substituted Vitamin G (Guinness, my beer of choice) for milk during the famine - it contains as much Vitamin D as milk (and some other stuff I forget) and beer was easier to come by than cows.
