| | Well, despite the fact you can take your baby to the police or the hospital and turn the baby over there, it is still embarrassing and shameful to be "abandoning" your baby. If it's not "your" baby and you have a story distancing yourself from the baby, you don't have to deal with the people thinking you're a bad mother, an unnatural woman, whatever, for wanting to abandon your newborn.

| | True, MJ. Too bad she couldnt foresee the media frenzy she would create, though.

Under Florida law, a parent or relative can turn a newborn over to authorities with no questions asked during the first three days of his or her life.

| | I can't imagine how any new mother could do this.
I've heard of post-partum depression, but can post-partum psychosis occur so soon after birth?
That poor little baby! I hope he recovers completely from this act of neglect, and that he finds a loving home. |

| | True, but I heard on the radio that she didn't want the baby and that she didn't want anyone to know she'd had a baby. |

| | I would much rather a woman brought in a baby with a crazy story than the woman leaving the baby in a plastic bag on the sidewalk. We've had a couple of those in NYC lately, usually not too far from the churches/police stations/hospitals where women can leave babies with no fear of prosecution.

| | I think Erik was questioning why a relative would be allowed to bring in a baby, which I admit puzzles me a bit, too.

| | You mean like this is my great grandnephew Jimmy and I'm bringing him in?
That would be odd.
