Go directly to Jail. Do not pass Go. Do not collect $200.

Re Rove Leaving White House

Can you pardon someone before they've been indicted?

Re Rove Leaving White House

It's really odd that Rove is leaving now. I should think that there is plenty more damage he can do.

Maybe he wants to do it from a distance. Or maybe for the next generation.

Re Rove Leaving White House

I  Tom Toles. He started in the Buffalo News and I learned a lot about current events as a teen reading the hard-news articles to figure out what he was saying in his cartoons.

Thanks for the teaching tip!

Next social studies lesson will start on the OpEd page - the cartoon, of course.

Great teaching tool. My first journalism class teacher (7th grade) used editorial cartoons for a week and then handed out stories she had clipped from a local paper and told us to do a cartoon.

That's where my troubles began.

This was in the mid-seventies, in the lily-white cornfield of the midwest. The only black person I had ever seen with my eyes was a kid from Up With People who stayed at our house for a couple of nights. Everything else I knew about African-Americans came from TV.

I tell you that prologue because my story was about a gentleman who worked for the city of Kalamazoo. His job was revitalizing the downtown district and in this story talked about the struggle of competing against the suburban shopping malls. I only knew he was black because of a picture accompanying the story.

I put two and two together, drawing on the blaxploitation movies I'd seen on TV and the only other black person I knew of besides Gary from Up With People - Muhammad Ali.

The cartoon I came up with was a small black character in boxing trunks and gloves, waving his crudely-drawn fists at an opponent represented by a giant Converse Chuck Taylor shoe with an ankle growing out of the frame. Drawing from the lessons in the class, I substituted "Suburban Malls" for the Chuck Taylor logo. For the piece de resistance, I had a speech bubble with the city planner screaming, "I'm gonna get you sucker!"

My mother had to come in for a conference by the end of the week.

Re Rove Leaving White House

Another advantage of homeschooling. NO conferences with the principal.

So did your teacher give up cartoons as a teaching tool?

Re Rove Leaving White House

Oh, I don't know, I have conferences all the time.

At least, that's what I tell people when they catch me talking to myself.

That's OK. The teacher at Matt's school is sleeping with the principal - but don't tell anyone.
