Heck, it could be that the child was molested by a family member and Guitierrez-Juaraz was a handy local scapegoat. But at least a baby produces some DNA for analysis to make it clear who it might be or isn't.

No problem. Just my usual word of caution against knee-jerk stranger-danger and anti-immigrant perceptions
I was coming back to say that I don't think I need to clarify that I am all for cutting the balls off whoever impregnanted this child, but thought maybe I'd put my vengeful thoughts out clearly anyway.

Given most places' tendency to toss in the clink first and straighten it out later, though, it still seems weird that they haven't progressed very far towards any charges.

He wasn't picked up until the pregnant girl walked in to give birth last week... They can take their time though, since he won't be released anyway because he'll be deported on his immigration status if he's not jailed for a crime. It could also be sensitivity to their witness - the 10 year old is doubly-traumatized now, first for rape (whoever/however that happened) and secondly for childbirth, which she probably wasn't at all expecting or prepared for.

where are the parents? Did this child get any medical attention before last week?
I know that abortion is a hot topic for many, but I (and I'm only speaking for me) have no problem with a child victim of rape being given an abortion. |

The child was still raped. That has to be dealt with separately from the pregnancy. I'm not convinced that terminating the pregnancy will be best for the child. Also, we had a case here in MD of a child who was repeatedly taken for abortions by her stepfather. Giving birth ONCE would have been so much better if it meant the SOB got caught.

I'm not ready to say that this pregnancy should have been terminated - I don't know enough to decide on that, and it's not my call to make. I was asking where were/are the parents?
I thought it went without saying that the bastard who raped her (whoever he is) should be punished. |

Either the pregnancy wasn't obvious, the 10-year-old knew how to hide it well, or the family knew. And if the family knew and didn't get her medical help, that points to a host of other problems.

Could it be the child didn't even know she was pregnant? Most 10 year olds I know might not even realize pregnancy.

I think thats possible, but I have a hard time wrapping my brains around a 9-month pregnant 10 year old not having parents (if they're in the picture) not notice something. I can understand, though, how a parent would not consider that their 10 year old might be pregnant. I'm not sure how a parent could fathom that if they didn't know about the rape. I just think that the child must have had symptoms and physical changes that should have sparked concern from parents and/or teachers. I wonder what this little girls home life was like. |

If the parents were Hispanic like the alleged perpetrator maybe they also were illegal and hesitated to get her medical care.
It is a travesty all the way around.

The story doesn't say this was a full-term pregnancy. It also doesn't say she didn't get medical care.
Also, I've seen some morbidly obese 10 year olds you'd never guess were pregnant - if they were.
I also saw an 11 year old who did apparently get prenatal care and who supposedly never got out of her house for any reason, except maybe school. Her parents were disgustingly excited about the birth of this baby as mom had never been able to have a second child. Made us really crazy. I don't know if there was ever a real investigation of that case. It was just before I left the hospital where that baby was born.

An update on this story. Quote: Man pleads guilty to raping a child
man accused of raping a 10-year-old girl has pleaded guilty.
At a pretrial hearing Tuesday, Guadalupe Gutierrez-Juarez, 38, pleaded guilty to one charge of rape, and the other two rape charges against him will be dropped.
Sentencing has tentatively been set for Oct. 14, pending a psycho-sexual evaluation and a presentence report. Gutierrez-Juarez was arrested April 28 and charged with rape after St. Anthony police were contacted by medical authorities earlier that day and notified them the 10-year-old was pregnant. Two additional rape charges were filed against Gutierrez-Juarez on May 9. According to court records, Gutierrez-Juarez is accused of raping the victim during three separate monthlong periods from Aug. 1, 2007 to Jan. 31.
The girl gave birth by Caesarean section at Madison Memorial Hospital in April.
The investigation also led to Isabel Chasarez, 26, being charged.
Chasarez was jailed May 9 on a charge of injury to a child. On Aug. 26, Chasarez entered a guilty plea to the charge.
Under her plea agreement with the state, she has agreed to plead guilty and the state is recommending probation and deportation.
Gutierrez-Juarez is being held in the Fremont County jail with bail set at $250,000.
The 10-year-old rape victim and her baby were both taken into protective custody with the Idaho Health and Welfare Department.

The youngest child mother I personally have cared for was 11. She looked about 8. Parents swore she never left the house. The really disgusting thing was that we believed them. We also believed she never had any visitors, and no, we didn't think it was a virgin birth (that mom was 28)
