Re Ted Kennedy has malignant brain tumor

He has had a distinguished career and continued to work in public service at an age when most politicians have retired.

I hope that he spends what time he has left however he wants to--whether continuing in the Senate or resting in Hyannisport, and I am thankful for his years of championing Democratic ideals.

Yes, that was Teddy. Chappaquidic (is that how you spell it?).

I heard this last night and was saddened...he's been a very forceful person in the Senate.

Re Ted Kennedy has malignant brain tumor

Hmm. OK, yes, the Kennedys have had a lot of tragic incidents in their family. And they're also a bunch of risk-takers (I don't consider playing-football-while-skiing a low-risk activity, so I didn't see the crash-into-tree death as "tragic" as much as a nomination for a Darwin award). But once you reach 76 years old, the odds are getting more likely that you'll get some sort of cancer, heart/vascular disease, or other illness that will move you on to your demise, so while I'm sad Teddy's got a brain tumor, I don't see it as "tragic" as much as just the normal course of events for someone who's lived that long. (Yes I know 76 is the new 66, but still!)

Re Ted Kennedy has malignant brain tumor

I was thinking the same thing last night. It isn't really like he is a spring chicken or anything and he has outlived a lot of other folks! But I don't know a lot of people who actually get brain tumors. Prostate, breast, liver, lung seem much more common.

I thought that was Sonny Bono...which one of the Kennedys was it?

And agree on your point MJ that the brain tumor, while sad, is not a tragedy. John-John flying his plane into the sea is a tragedy.

I think that one of the Kennedy cousins ran into a tree and lost a leg or something like that.

Michael Kennedy died while playing football on skis and crashing into a tree in 1997. Sonny Bono died that way too - skiing into a tree, that is, but he wasn't playing football with the Kennedys at the same time

I don't even see John-John as flying his plane into the sea as a tragedy - it was an inexperienced flyer flying in conditions he had no business flying in, but because their family mantra seems to be "no risky behavior untried," he did it anyway. Tragedy is being hit by a bus while standing minding your own business; doing something out of the ordinary and highly risky is just foolishness, IMHO.

Ted Kennedy Jr. lost his leg to cancer as a child. That I would call a tragedy.

The loss of John was to me a tragedy because of the potential that was lost. Flying however was his choice.

He's having brain surgery this morning. I must say that this is gutsy and admirable. Try to have the tumor removed no matter the risk rather than just waiting to die.

Latest on Ted

Quote:
A family spokeswoman says Sen. Edward M. Kennedy is out of surgery at Duke Medical Center. His doctor says brain surgery was successful and "accomplished our goals." Kennedy had surgery for his cancerous brain tumor, and faces chemotherapy and radiation treatment following the procedure.
And as I heard it, John Kennedy Jr. was not an inexperienced flier.

Re Ted Kennedy has malignant brain tumor

Obviously if Mr. Kennedy had earned an Instrument Rating, he would not have found himself in a situation that was beyond his flying capabilities.

Mr. Kennedy, with hardly any experience flying his plane alone at night, became disoriented in haze

etc... It stuck out in my mind for the reasons above - everyone said "Oh, Kennedy curse!" and I was all "How many people fly their own planes to Martha's Vineyard at night?" (Yes I know flying commercially is safer than driving, but that's assuming professional, experienced flight staff; and yes I know there are people who own their own planes and fly them all over the place, but they're in the minority of the general public and most seem to take more hours of instruction than JFKjr did.)

Re Ted Kennedy has malignant brain tumor

Perhaps a 76 year old man having a brain tumor isn't a tragedy, but the family has endured so much sorrow and loss that this is just another leaf on this family's tragic tree. Risky business or not, it just seems that when something happens to this family it isn't small beans.

Re Ted Kennedy has malignant brain tumor

There is not curse. This is a family that has had its share of very very sad stories. I was very sad when John Jr. died, but it wasn't a curse - it was an accident and probably poor judgment.
Senator Kennedy's cancer is bad luck. He's in his 70s. More people get cancer now than decades ago, because people live longer now. I think it's very very sad, but hardly a curse.
JFK and RFK were assassinated. A crime - not a curse.
