| | If you've had any news on today, I'm sure you've seen this: Killer Tornado destroys Scout Camp
Still waiting for news. One of Jeremy's best friends is at that camp.

| | Re Boy Scout Camp Destroyed | | Just called a friend who talked to CJ's parents...he is "fine" according to his mom. Don't know what that means other than he's alive at this point.
I am just crying watching the coverage. Those poor kids are going to be traumatized after going through that.

| | Re Boy Scout Camp Destroyed | | The Gov's of Iowa and NE are holding a news conference and released the names of the four scouts that were killed - 3 13-year olds, 1 14-year old. Three from Omaha, one from Iowa.
Stories of heroism are being told over and over. The boys were all hand selected from their troops as leaders and the camp was a leadership training camp...they were doing triage, rescued the camp director and his family from under their house, clearing paths for rescuers to be able to get to them because there were trees down everywhere.
The coverage from spotters in the area is incredible...I can't even imagine what these boys and their scout masters went through.

| | Re Boy Scout Camp Destroyed | | What a devastating thing. Those poor boys. It sounds like they all acted really heroically, but kids shouldn't have to deal with these things. It's just tragic.
I'm glad CJ is ok. |

| | Re Boy Scout Camp Destroyed | | I saw interviews with a few of the boys this morning - can't imagine what their parents went through as they waited for news. My heart is breaking for the ones who lost their boys.

| | Re Boy Scout Camp Destroyed | | I did finally talk to someone at CJ's house (I think it was his aunt). Evidently there were two groups of boys, and he was in the group that didn't have any (or minimal) injuries.
It's such a sad, sad story. As Delia said, they acted heroically, but they should have to be in that situation. I'll be driving near the area tomorrow.

| | Re Boy Scout Camp Destroyed | | It sounds like the boys and leaders did everything according to the book (there really is one). Injuries and deaths would likely have been much worse if they hadn't. The one change which is likely to come from this is that Scout (and other ) camps in tornado-prone areas are likely to install actual storm shelters. I'm sure it seemed an unnecessary expense prior to this incident.

| | Re Boy Scout Camp Destroyed | | One of the little guys (the one from Eagle Grove IA), was such a great kid. He made pillow cases for the hospital for kids that had to be in the hospital so they could have something awesome to sleep on (that was better than the standard issue).
And, he made them for all of his teachers. What a sad loss (any kid).

| | Re Boy Scout Camp Destroyed | | Kim, did you know him? I honestly wasn't sure where Eagle Grove was (bad IowaMinnesotaSouthNorthDakotan that I am).
Judy, I wondered why there weren't storm shelters...but really, to house 100+ kids and leaders is a pretty big shelter to build. I would have thought they'd at least have had some kind of cement bunker or something.
Not that it probably would have made any difference in this instance. The boys that were killed and injured more seriously were in a building with a stone fireplace that colllapsed/imploded. A cement building probably would have collapsed under the force of the storm (heard it was classified as an F3).

| | Re Boy Scout Camp Destroyed | | Families in the boy scouts had talked about a little guy that did this project. But, it wasn't someone I knew personally.
Then, seeing the news this morning, they were showing the special things he did and I realized this would have been one in the same.
Sad stories. I really hate stories involving kids. Breaks my heart every time.

| | Re Boy Scout Camp Destroyed | | I can't find the link again, but one of the families is raising money to build storm shelters at the camp. Seems like an appropriate memorial to these boys. The story said underground shelter. I don't know if that's even practical. You wouldn't need space for the kids to sleep, though, just sitting/breathing space.

| | Re Boy Scout Camp Destroyed | | It was just awful. Those poor boys.
Without the training they had, there may have been even more casualties.
I can remember chaperoning at a Girl Scout camp when we lived in South Dakota. They showed us a little carved out cave in the hillside. "This is the tornado shelter," they told us. There were about 50 of us, and it looked like it might have held a dozen 8 year olds.
I imagine that camps all over Tornado Alley will be evaluating their shelters now. | | |
