| | How sad that someone so young and talented should die...
Even though he played for the other team, I respected him. |

Even though I hardly agreed with anything you said, you said it with class. |

| | Snow was barely 50 when he was diagnosed. I don't know if he had a family history, if his diagnosis was following a routine screening, or if he had symptoms as I did prior to diagnosis. Screening colonoscopies at 50 save lots of lives, but for many of us, that's not early enough. If you know you have a family history of colon cancer, you know to get screened early. My kids will. If you don't know you're at risk, diagnosis can come too late for a cure, as it did with Tony Snow. Sad situation.

| | He did have a family history. His mother died of colon cancer when Tony Snow was 17. The article didn't say her age.
But, yes, everyone should have a colonoscopy. I had one in May. The prep day was horrible. No eating of anything but jello and chicken broth. Followed by massive quantities of a solution I just couldn't keep down. Followed by lots of time close to the porcelain. But the procedure itself is nothing, really nothing. I slept right through it and now thankfully I don't have to have another colonoscopy for 10 years. Maybe by then doctors will have come up with a better diagnostic tool. |

| | If his mother died of colon cancer, he should probably have had a colonoscopy before age 50. He may have and might just have had a particularly aggressive cancer. More likely he didn't, though. For reasons which entirely escape me, people I know who have family histories, and even one who has a personal history of colon cancer avoid getting scoped.
I've never had a really bad prep, and I haven't always been asleep for my colonoscopies, but the experience has never been remotely as unpleasant as surgery, chemo, and radiation. My mom was particularly lucky. She was diagnosed with colon cancer about 18 months after I was -- screening colonoscopy. Hers was early enough that they could remove it during the scope and just follow up frequently. My mom has had a lot of trouble with the preps, but she won't miss a colonoscopy for anything.
