| | Burning questions:
1) Will the men's basketball team redeem our country's standings in that sport?
2) How will the cyclists deal with the air pollution issue?
3) WTF is up with Bob Costas' hair?!?!?!?

I'm very sad that the events have been marred by this terrible murder. I just love the Olympics! | When my son visited Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong, Beijing was his least favorite of the three (he loved the other two.) I guess it was just more political.
I remember him telling me he had hired a bicycle taxi to take him somewhere for an agreed upon price. When he arrived at his destination he gave the man the agreed upon price but the man wanted more and started hitting him with a stick.
Beijing sounded a little creepy to me. |

| | All big cities have their problems. I've never been to Beijiing - I'm sure it has good and bad elements.
But back to the opening ceremonies - did anyone else watch? I thought they were soooooo amazing. It was just beyond imagination.
Don't know much about Basketball. I understand that the Chinese stopped mining, put restrictions on driving, and shut down some factories to try and cut the smog before the world came for the Olympics.
Costa's hair....just......whatever. |

| | Did not watch the opening ceremonies, Wormie.
I am in general, less than disinterested in the Summer Games as a rule. Winter games catch my attention.
I did have to giggle this a.m. when Dan tuned into the Today Show (or whatever news thing was on) and there was a gal who was talking about "bizarre" food in Bejing. She was going into details on the black, rotted eggs...the talking heads quickly went to break. I can just imagine back in the studio, the producer was probably panicing..."States viewers are eating breakfast, don't want to hear about how dirt is piled up around these eggs for months...BREAK FOR COMMERCIAL BEFORE WE LOSE THEM!!!"

| | If she was being judgemental, maybe they were afraid that it would be bad to criticize another culture and didn't want political correctness problems.

The neatorama blogpost about it...
And their link to a more detailed info page...
Enjoy.

| | The Chinese do eat some odd things. They actually make a soup from birds nest. Um. Isn't that twigs and bird mucus? Yum.
If the sell a dvd of the opening ceremonies, I might have to buy it. I didn't think in advance to record it because its usually not that interesting.

| | Well, for a bunch of self professed Olympic addicts, y'all are sure being quiet!
I have been sucked into the black hole of hype, staying up late every night to watch swimming (mens AND womens - is Dara Torres amazing or WHAT), gymnastics, track and volleyball.
Phelps is a fish with legs. That win on Friday night was nothing less than stupendous. And I was in tears when he went up to his mom last night after the US won the relay. Move over Mark Spitz!
Bolt from Jamaica (mon) is freakish in his running! Holey cow, I swear the guy was not even breathing hard after winning the 100m last night!!!!
And I love Dara and how she is almost like everyone's mom. What an incredible story for her to be 41 years old and winning medals!

| | Sounds like you've got that wrong, Amy.
Lots of gymnasts falling on their knees last night. I felt bad for the girl from China, even though I didn't want her to win. And what about the one how scored a ZERO on the vault because she went before the green light? Geez, how disappointing would that be.

Historical data on medal counts: A Map of Olympic Medals
" Circles are sized by the number of medals that countries won in summer Olympic Games. Use the slider to view past Olympics, or click on a country to display a list of its medal winners. "
A pretty amazing resource. Though it slows my PC to a crawl as it reloads various years/graphs.
It is interesting to contrast 1980 and 1984 when, first, the U.S. did not participate and then the USSR returned the favor...
Make sure you watch it as it first loads, to see the map/circles morph through the years... Way cool.

It's odd - I hardly watch any sports all year, but I just love watching all the Olympics!!! If I could stay home from work, I could easily sit in front of the TV for 2 weeks and watch all day!!!
