| | Re Mercy Flight Crashes on Long Island-Boston Route | | Correction - it wasn't a helicopter. This was a Beech Bonanza, which is a single-engine small airplane.
This was an Angel Flight, which is an organization that pairs aircraft owners with patients needing treatment at hospitals far from home. It started with corporate flights about 20 years ago and filtered down to small plane operators, most of whom are small business owners and professionals. If you belong to the network and you have space on your flight, you call Angel Flight a day before and they match you with someone in your area who needs a ride to where you're going. It's a great program.
Two things jumped out at me in this story. This was a really old airplane. That doesn't have to be a bad thing if the plane is well maintained, but if the owner wasn't religious about maintenance and upkeep the chances of a mechanical failure would be higher. The other thing is the weather. The police report heavy overcast, which means the pilot could have been disoriented if he was trying an instrument approach into the other airport. The most likely cause is a combination of the two, a mechanical problem that distracted the pilot enough to cause a fatal error in navigating to the airport.

| | Re Mercy Flight Crashes on Long Island-Boston Route | | Given the age of the pilot, I'm wondering if he was in physical distress before the crash? Heart attack maybe or stroke?

| | Re Mercy Flight Crashes on Long Island-Boston Route | | Thank God the parking lot was unoccupied. Typical LI parking lots are usually crowded, and even more people might have been killed.
I know that small planes have poorer safety records than larger planes, but it does seem as if regulations need to be tightened.
My prayers for the little twins and their guardians. |
