I need help!
So, I found this really cool coat/hat hook thing (has four attachments). I could go on and on and ON about how cool this thing is however, what I've done is NOT COOL!
I thought I was a smart chickie - (and please bear with me on the LACK of PROPER terminology here) - I put in those thingies that provide support to your screw (on walls that are basically just drywall). Following me so far?
Okay, so I measured where everything went, got out that thing to make sure that what I was hanging would be straight, and I drilled.
The first one went in beautifully. The second one caused the drywall around it to CRUMBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So now, not only can I hang my cool looking thing, I have a small hole in my wall.
So how am I going to fix this? My husband (who is conveniently out of town today) is gonna go apeshit. He hates it when I put holes in the wall (literally, this time).
I suppose I can get some of that patch stuff I use when I want to permanently remove a hole from my wall, but how do I fix it so that I can make it the REAL hole that I need in order to hang up my cool thing?

I love it. Haven't heard the term apeshit since I was in college!!! I understand the sentiment totally!!! I don't know how to fix the dilemma--other than a few candles some wine and total seduction. See he won't be thinking straight when he sees it, and then maybe he'll be ok.
If not, try banannas.

| | Uh oh. Did you check for a stud behind your wall? Note: I am not referring to Norm. He's still behind his column.
Yu can use spackle or paste to fix the hole, but if you plan to hang a 4-hook coatrack on drywall, you'll still have problems. I'm assuming you used a plastic anchor that you were going to use to provide support for the screw? Drywall is not strong enough by itself to hold anything more than a light picture. Especially if you plan to use the rack to hold coats, you'll need to fasten the rack to an underlying stud.
To find a stud, knock along the wall until the tap sounds solid instead of hollow. Hang your coat rack here. Otherwise, you could end up with more than one hole in your wall when the whole thing comes crashing down.
LOL, what I usually do is go to the nearest Home Depot, tell them what I've done, and then buy the necessary supplies and fix my goof and then do it right.
Good luck, Kristina. Do let us know how it turns out. If it doesn't go well, try Angie's plan.

| | I had the same problem. I've got plaster walls instead of drywall, but the stuff just crumbled away. Since I rent and am not that picky about how I leave the place, I got a tube of nail hole fillier, patched it up AROUND the screw, let it dry and hung my rack.

| | Okay... here's what you need:
1. You need drywall anchors. You drill a little hole that is bigger than the one you need for the screw. You screw a drywall anchor inside of it. You screw what you need inside the drywall anchor. Each drywall anchor should be able to hold somewhere between 40-50 pounds (so if you have two, they should hold the weight of 80-100 pounds, etc.).
2. You need spackling compound. Any monkey can use this. It comes in a little tub, costs about $2.00 for the tub, and you can even get some that dry either white, pink or clear. If you have the kind that dries clear, you don't have to paint unless you have a lot of light in that area (because it'll look slightly different than the paint that exists there already).
BTW, a drywall anchor costs about $0.10. | | |
