Exclamation More food recalls - canteloupes and baby food - salmonella and botulism

Tainted Cantaloupe, Baby Food Recalled - Yahoo! News

It gets more and more tempting every day to go live on a commune.

For once I'm pretty happy that I'm fasting tomorrow

Isn't it weird that all of a sudden EVERYTHING is tainted? Salmonella in cantaloupes, peanut butter, hummus, and salami, botulism in baby food...
I think that either we used to eat these pathogens before and never knew about it or the microcosmos is fighting back.

Hi Kaktus and welcome aboard.

And I think you have an excellent point. All the anti-bacterial, anti-biotic stuff we take may be making us MORE suceptible.

I think that reporting is just better now. I don't think there is more contamination. However, with some organisms, there is a tendency to have more resistant strains due to antibiotic overuse.

People who grow their own cantelopes know they need to wash them before cutting into them. Folks who buy them in the grocery store presume they've already been washed. They forget how much they're likely to have been handled.

Botulism in baby food is a result of inadequate time or temperature during the canning process. The spores of the botulism bacterium are really tough and if you are a little too cool or a few minutes too short on your timing, you can be in big trouble. Makes me glad my pediatrician was opposed to all jarred baby foods (for other reasons).

The peanut butter puzzles me, though

Kaktus.

I did get excited thinking Rora was back and maybe Bridgette wasn't too far behind, though.

Maybe Bridgette will be in soon - she just got back from her workshop a few days ago and I'm sure she's got a lot to catch up on.
