| | I am hosting this year for the first time. Granted, it will be me, hubby, Connor, and my parents. But still, it is my first time to cook a turkey! I figured if I'm going to screw up, there's no one else I'd rather screw up in front of.

| | I've never found the turkey-cooking to be that bad, it's like roasting a really big chicken. Fancy turkey cooking rules discussed and discarded here. I'm always more preoccupied with side dishes.
Is doing both sweet potatoes and mashed potatoes carbohydrate overkill? I'm thinking it's starch-heavy to do, but I don't know which I would eliminate, they both seem necessary.

| | All carbs all the time. I'm not sure it is even possible to have too many carbs at meal. Seems kinda blasphemous.
I only eat the turkey because I feel like I have to. I force feed myself protein.
Stuffing, yams, potatoes, chicken & noodles over the taters. Then pie, pie, pie and some cheesecake.

I don't know which I would eliminate, they both seem necessary. | Eliminate neither. Add some scalloped potatoes too. It would be unamerican not to have multiple potato dishes.
I am going to mom's. I don't know what we are eating. I keep trying to ask what I can make, but I keep being told that she's doing everything and just come. Shrug.
I hope my mom at least makes some turkey breast. My dad hates turkey (ya, he's a Commie or something...) so sometimes she doesn't even bother making the turkey. I hope there is tons of turkey and I get tons of left-overs so I don't have to cook for a good long time |

| | I'm up in the air....
We always go to St. Louis to see our son (formerly sons--one is still in S. Korea and has just applied to UT Austin for grad school.)
This year hubby isn't sure he can leave because of problems at work. He won't know till Tuesday. He told us to leave without him if he couldn't go, but that makes me feel guilty. Still, I haven't been to St. Louis since March....and my big city visit to NY was wasted because my sister dragged me and our Alaskan relatives to Atlantic City for the entire time I was there....
But if we go my son doesn't have really elaborate cooking facilities. We generally keep it pretty simple and just enjoy one another's company. |

| | You can always buy the turkey meal from the grocery store. I think they all have "heat and eat" meals now. You might get one for hubby and one for your son and yourself. Maybe you can enjoy the meal on speaker phone with one another so it's not like being so far apart?
Boo his work Hope it doesn't come to that. |

| | We're having friends over. Everyone will arrive around 11 for the Packers game...sit around and eat muchies and drink beer and wine until dinner (4-ish). Planned menu:
Turkey (big 16 lb-er in the fridge thawing as of yesterday)
Mashed potatoes
Sweet potatoes (baked fresh ones)
Green bean bundles
Corn (boring....maybe I should make Bree's corn casserole)
Delicious cranberry-orange relish (Lynn)
Yucky cranberry jell from a can (Dan)
Stuffing
Cinnamon apples
I know my friends are bringing dessert - | | | | | | I told her pumpkin pie is mandatory | | | | | | but anything else is her choice.
I'm thinking maybe one frou-frou drink for after dinner, but not sure what to try. Maybe chocolate-tinis?

| | Up in the air here, too. We know we're going to my folks this year, but for how long is a big question. Supposedly we were supposed to close on the house the day after T'giving, but it's sounding like the buyer will be out of town the whole weekend. Then he's going out of town.
DH doesn't officially have that Friday off, but his boss will let him off if we're closing. Not sure what he'll let him do if we're not closing, it's just T'giving going on.
And Friday is when our family is actually *doing* T'giving, so I don't know how the weekend is going to go!

| | this will not be the Thanksgiving of my dreams. It'll just be the 2 of us at home. I love cooking a big Thanksgiving meal - its the one day a year that I just love making everything - even the turkey I won't eat, but it's just the 2 of us. We're sort of broke so going out isn't an option and I won't be buying any fancy groceries. I'm determined that at least they'll be a sweet potato. |

I shall have a tofurky sandwich
He shall have kosher turkey hot dogs
and we can split home made sweet potato fries!
Yum. |

| | LOL, Wormie, the sweet potato fries sound good. I made them a few weeks ago - cut up the fries and then tossed them in a baggie that I'd mixed a few tablespoons of vegetable oil, salt, pepper, cumin, a hint of nutmeg. I baked them at 350 until they were done and OMG were they good. I made a dipping sauce to go with them out of (don't laugh) sour cream and marshmallow fluff. It was excellent.

| | yep, I make my regular potatoes that way, and figured I could do the same with nutmeg. Didn't thing of cumin. I'm not overly fond of cumin, but I'm als (just ask Brian) somewhat spiced challenged. I need to learn how to use spices and herbs better to enhance foods.
I used to go to a really fun restaurant in NYC (I think they're gone now) that served the Sweet Potato Fries with marshmallow sauce. I don't like marshmallow, but they were good! |

| | Our son is coming home on Wednesday--we're having turkey, and I don't know what else now. He wants his mashed potatoes. He looks forward every year to them. I never make them any other time of the year!
He just turned 21 on Wednesday, and both he and his sister are thinking about our "beverages".
Oh, and it will just be the 4 of us as usual.
